What is the Weight Requirement for Forward-Facing Car Seats?

Are you trying to decide when to turn your toddler around to face forward in your vehicle?  At a minimum, all children should remain in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least a year old and weigh 20 lb. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) both recommend that children remain rear-facing for as long as possible—at least until they reach the maximum height or weight for their car seat in rear-facing orientation. Many states have updated their car seat laws to reflect this recommendation as well. The best option is to move your child into a rear-facing convertible or all-in-one car seat and to use that seat in the rear-facing position until your child reaches the maximum weight or height limit.
