How to give your hair more height with little-to-no effort

There are some people who have been genetically blessed with bouncy, voluminous hair. The kind of hair that has just the right amount of body and oomph. And then there are those who have to spend a significant amount of time and effort trying to get their hair to sit high enough that it’s not totally flat against their scalp, but not so high that they’re trying to replicate an ‘80s newsreader ‘do.

If you identify with the latter then here are a few quick and easy tricks you can use to give your hair instant volume at your roots – minimal effort required!

1

Tease at the crown

Sadly, teasing doesn’t have a good rep. While it tends to be synonymous with a bad ‘80s hairstyle, the technique is actually pretty useful in creating height at your roots – you just need to be careful how aggressively you tease, and be wary of the tools you use.The trick is to use a boar bristle brush, and to tease the hair that sits just under the top layer. Pull each section you’re teasing up and taut and gently brush down a few times. Then let your top layer fall loose for natural height.

Try: Moroccanoil Boar Bristle Classic Brush

2

Dust with volume powder

A light dusting of volume powder at your roots, combined with some gentle scalp massaging, can make a world of difference to your hairstyle. We do, however, recommend using this one when you don’t have freshly washed hair. Volumising powders work by giving your hair extra grit and hold – that’s how it gets that height – and that can leave clean hair feeling a little heavy.

Try: bhave Gun Powder Matte Styling Dust

3

Blow-dry upside down

Flip your head upside down when rough-drying your wet hair and make sure you dry your hair away from your scalp. This nifty little trick will create lift at the root so that when you flick your hair back, you have more instant height.

4

Use rollers

We’re not suggesting a whole head of hair rollers – there’s nothing quick and easy about that. But that doesn’t mean a few tactically placed rollers can’t help you out. Take five or six rollers and place them around your part, just at your roots and under your top layer of hair, and blast your hair with hot air for a few seconds. Then leave your hair to cool down before taking them out. Too easy!

5

Use a root-boosting lotion

If you regularly blow-dry your hair, before you get your round brush and hairdryer going, use a root-boosting serum or lotion on your (towel-dried) roots to give your hair natural lift and height when blow-drying. For the best results, use it under each section and on the surface.

Try: John Frieda® Luxurious Volume Root Booster Blow Dry Lotion

6

Change your part

Everyone has a natural part, and it’s around your part where your hair sits the flattest. So to give your hair instant va-va-voom (and a mini makeover), change your part. You’ll get the most volume at your crown if you opt for a deep side part that’s created when your hair is dry, but if you want subtle lift, create a different part when your hair is wet. If your new part just doesn’t want to stay put, use a normal-to-medium hold hairspray to keep your hair in place.
