The national flag was adopted in its present form during the meeting of Constituent Assembly held on the 22 July 1947, twenty-three days before India's Independence on August 15, 1947.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag and address the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15 on the occasion of Independence Day. This custom of unfurling the national flag has been going on since 1947 when India gained freedom from British colonial rule.

There are three colours in the national flag - deep saffron (Kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. In the centre of the white band is a navy-blue wheel which represents the Ashok chakra, which is a depiction of the Dharma Chakra; a wheel represented with 24 spokes. The ratio of the width of the flag to its length is two to three.
