What is the International Registration Plan (IRP)?

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement among the United States, District of Columbia and provinces of Canada that recognizes the registration of commercial motor vehicles registered by other jurisdictions. This allows a qualifying commercial vehicle to travel through several jurisdictions with one license plate.

What information will I need to request my temporary permit?

You’ll need:

• US DOT and federal ID numbers
• Legal company name and DBA (if applicable)
• Billing address (if different)
• Combined gross registered weight
• License plate expiration date
• Caller name and phone number
• Fax or email to send permit to
• Unit number
• Year and make of vehicle
• Complete VIN
• License plate number and state
• Unit type (tractor, straight truck, etc.)
• States you are ordering permit for
• Date permit needs to be effective

Note that some states may ask for additional information.

Do you offer a combo permit for trip & fuel?

Yes. If you require a trip and fuel permit, we will apply for a combo permit when available.

What is a trip permit?

A trip permit grants temporary registration of a commercial or private carrier in a state or province where the carrier is not apportioned (state or province not listed with weight on cab card).   If travel is required to a state and a vehicle does not have IFTA and IRP credentials, trip and fuel permits are required. Trip permits are valid for a defined period of time or for a single trip.

How do I qualify for a temporary trip permit?

Your vehicle is eligible for a temporary trip permit if:

• It is not an IRP-registered vehicle
• The power unit has 3 or more axles
• The power unit has registered or gross weight of 26,000+ lbs
• The power unit and trailer have a combined gross or registered weight of 26,000+ lbs

How do I qualify for a temporary fuel permit?

Your vehicle is eligible for a temporary fuel permit if:

• It is not an IFTA-registered vehicle
• The power unit has 3 or more axles
• The power unit has 2 axles, and vehicle has gross or registered weight of 26,000+ lbs
• The power unit and trailer have a combined gross or registered weight of 26,000+ lbs

How does my vehicle qualify for permanent IFTA/IRP credentials?

Your vehicle is eligible for permanent IFTA/IRP credentials if:

• The vehicle has 2 axles and exceed 26,000 lbs
• The power unit has 3 or more axles
• The power unit and trailer have a combined weight of 26,000+ lbs

We have tow truck plates on our vehicles. Those are exempt from IRP, so we can travel in other jurisdictions without a portion to place or trip permits, right?

A vehicle with restricted plates (including tow truck plates) doesn't require registration with apportioned plates, but you may do so if you wish. Why would you if you don't have to? Good question.   A vehicle operating with restricted plates may or may not be granted reciprocity outside of the base jurisdiction. This varies by state, and you would need to verify whether the states where you operate have reciprocity agreements in place with your base state to recognize those restricted plates.

• If you operate frequently in states that don't offer reciprocity, then apportioning may be the best option.
• If you operate only infrequently in states that don't offer reciprocity, trip permits may be the more economical solution.

If you only operate in states that have reciprocity agreements in place with your base state, then neither apportion plates nor trip plates would be necessary.
