Summary

Triple H is a character from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) promotion.

He’s been Triple H for so long now that some fans may have forgotten what those Hes used to stand for. Nowdays, “Triple H” just means what it means, but it used to be short for “Hunter Hearst Helmsley,” in the days before he became a perennial WWE championship contender.

His real name has always been Jean-Paul Levesque, and as the name suggests, he’s originally from Quebec. He first appeared in World Championship Wrestling in the early ‘90s as an undistinguished power wrestler named “Terra Ryzing” (say it as one word), but he didn’t make too many waves until a few years after jumping ship for the WWF.

Hunter Hearst Helmsley – scion of wealthy Connecticut bluebloods looking to show the proles how it’s done in the WWF ring – never caught on all that well, although he did have a picturesque feud with the hog-farming Godwinn family. When he joined with Shawn Michaels to form the DeGeneration X faction, becoming the trash-talking Triple H, his colorful interviews and “Suck it!” catchphrase made him a symbol of the new “WWF Attitude” era. The only vestige of his original persona is his finishing move, which is still called the “Pedigree.”

His feud with the Rock in 1998 and 1999 helped turn both men into breakout solo stars, and a protracted war with Mick Foley – who he temporarily forced into retirement – pushed him over the top, making Triple H a permanent fixture on the WWE main event scene. Behind those scenes, he has a similarly important role, particularly since he’s married to front-office heir apparent Stephanie McMahon.
