My experience has always been that I have had better luck in the mornings. They respond to calling any time of day but they come to the calling better in the morning at first light. Another good time is between 9:30-11:30am when the gobbler(s) leave the tended hens and seek out other ones. I have had good luck at this time of day by simply giving an occasional yelp or content purr. Be careful. They come in more aware at this time and will often see you before you see them. Later in the day try to find turkeys on a pattern and set up ahead of time to intercept them as they walk by. Good luck and Good shooting, Rx #3 · Apr 15, 2006 (Edited) I'll Give that a try.. first Morning Light .. thanks if I find where they travel I will set my blind up, its nice this the first year its not a Draw for turkeys. #4 · Apr 15, 2006 when they are horny is another good time:wink: #5 · Apr 15, 2006 From my experience on bow hunting turkeys is if you can set up close to them in the morning they may come in but usually they fly up with a hen and you have to wait for her to dump him and the gobblers will be looking for other hens later in the morning.btw I shot both of mine this year around 9:15:tongue: good luck keep calling they like to come in silent:confused: #6 · Apr 15, 2006

I agree 100%. I have found the exact same results through my experience. #9 · Apr 16, 2006 The best time to call? If you are in a blind and waiting for birds to show up give a yelp or two every 30 minutes. You aren’t locating the birds they are locating you. During the day the birds aren’t just sitting in one place they are on the move. Help them locate you by calling, and a couple of decoys doesn’t hurt either. #10 · Apr 16, 2006 I agree with several folks that have mentioned first light and then again after 9:30 or so, once the hens begin to nest. The best time is whenever you can spend time in the turkey woods. Just plan on sitting up and staying there until mid day and you'll find that your success and close range encounters with Gobblers will dramatically improve. Good luck and good huntin' #11 · Apr 17, 2006 I have killed the majority of my birds around 9:30. Although it's real nice when you get one right off the roost and your eating biscuits and gravy by 7:00 am.:) #12 · Apr 17, 2006 at first light.. At first light the tom usually have some hens picked out to follow, so alittle later they will break off for other hens, although the later in the season you can get them in right out of roost when most of the hen have already been bred!!! #13 · Apr 17, 2006 It really depends on where you are at. I'm suprised by the responses about hens nesting @ 9:30. Here the gobblers are all hened up until well after lunch. The 1:00-3:00 time frame has worked the best for calling where I'm hunting. I'd agree that the mornings are great if the birds aren't henned up, but if they are it has been until well after lunch around here. One of the great things about turkeys is that they are generally active all day long. They may not be vocal but they are out there. Good Luck!! Insert Quotes Post Reply
