LOL, beat you to it mate . I asked Marty for a T5 CE installation guide. I've been testing all morning & all HD audio options are available, & working. So far AFR seems to be functioning perfectly well too. Will keep testing with different files etc. & see how it goes. (I haven't tested AAC yet though.) Obviously the SoC does support HD audio & it's been a limitation of the MINIX firmware all this time as to why it's never worked with the official MINIX ATV firmware. Given that as the case @MINIX - John / @MINIX – Martin , any chance of a correction to the official ATV firmware to fix the lack of HD audio passthrough (as with the U22) please? Thanks.

Trusted Helper @ArcticWolf Yes you did beat me to it !! Have just installed coreelec on the T5 and yes everything works fine and dandy, HDR, AFR, HD audio, DD+ Atmos etc, including AAC. I'd say its at least on par with the U22 and I might even go to to say the picture quality is better , and i didnt notice any lack of performance. ooh, and it boots back into ATV via the Power, sub menu option too >>> bonus ! Only minor issue it that i tend to use the little IR remote with the T5 ATV , and it doesnt respond with Coreelec >> @Marty , any ideas ?? So, @MINIX – Martin , @MINIX - John , as @ArcticWolf has intimated, and as nicely put as i can, whats the real reason for the lack of these features on the android firmwares for U22 and the T5 Last edited: Jan 28, 2021

Supported devices There is only support for devices that currently be able to use CoreELEC Amlogic-ng builds! This includes devices that are based on GXL, G12A, G12B and SM1 family SoC. For other types not listed here, maybe think about a hardware change/upgrade if you want to use Kodi Matrix. If not please stay on CoreELEC 9.2 with Kodi Leia as it will still be maintained. NOT supported devices SoC family GXB and S912. GXB support got dropped by Amlogic in newer Kernel. S912 do not and never had such Mali blob implementation to be able to be used on newer Kernel. I've never tried CoreELEC to date on any device, maybe I'll give it a go !

I used it some years ago (& LibreELEC) but then ended up choosing the ubiquitous & incredibly stable U9-H which can ultimately do a little bit of everything anyway for the most part. Plus, it has always worked perfectly well with Kodi for me personally, (including the obvious benefits in conjunction with an HD audio capable AVR & an HDR capable 4K TV too). The U9-H (as an example) also ran Kodi reasonably quickly in general but a few things weren't quite as snappy as they obviously could be, (heavy skins, extended info scripts etc. would tax it a little & it wasn't quite as fluent to use with Leia as it seemed to be with Krypton either). Additionally, also connected to my AVR is a Sky Q (sat TV box), Xbox One X, & obviously one or two of the MINIX Intel mini-PC's also doing their thing as well & frequently another MINIX Android hub for testing etc. (While they Intel mini-PC's are also great for HD audio too, sadly at present none of them support HDR.) I have a number of NAS on the network too for multimedia etc., with one running MySQL specifically for Kodi so I only need one central database/library instead of the obvious grief of keeping an individual library managed on each & every device I may also use with Kodi. (Or, if a device has to be wiped/flashed, Kodi uninstalled/reinstalled, or another new device/OS added, I can immediately access my entire library plus all previously scraped URLs etc. Ergo, I've been fighting the urge for some time to add in yet another device purely to run Kodi alone & nothing else .... .... However, lol. I finally relented & have been testing CoreELEC on the U22 for a short while now. After wondering if HD audio would also work via a T5 with CoreELEC too I PM'd @Marty to ask him if he had a CE T5 installation tutorial as well. Voila!! (I told him there was no rush but he posted the complete guide up the following day anyway .) I'm now well & truly sold after testing. I'm definitely going to either have a U22 or a T5 purely as a dedicated device for running CE/Kodi . Media still looks incredibly good on my trusty old U9-H but I can definitely see a visual improvement with CE too. (AFR is working exactly as intended whereas it could sometimes be a little flaky on the U9-H on start/stop at the times when I did actively use it.) My TV is now always allowing me to use various options again that would sometimes get greyed out with a U9-H if it wasn't detecting a true YUV 444 signal as well. With CE those options are no longer greying out at all so I'm obviously getting the enhanced benefits there & the display improvements are notable. Blacks with 1080p Pure Direct are certainly far deeper & richer, whites are cleaner, colours are a touch more vibrant again. (4K/HDR content is still no different as the U9-H & TV were obviously communicating properly there, that still looks absolutely incredible whichever device I use.) Then there's the sheer speed of Kodi itself . The T5 isn't quite as snappy as the U22 (not surprising) especially in the menus with my sizeable libraries, with complex skins, or if using certain scripts etc., but the T5 certainly isn't slow at all either . I eventually avoided using extended info scripts etc. on the U9-H as they ended up taking some time to react/load. Some things still take a couple of seconds on the U22 or a little extra on the T5 but hell are they quick lol, & obviously that's from an SD card too. (Installed to the eMMC there's the potential for even more speed & most features probably would be nigh on instantaneous.). If you want to shift back over to Android for any reason, the option to reboot from the eMMC is in the CE Kodi shutdown menu & you're back in, in the time it takes to load Android. Conclusion: Hell yes give it a go mate lol . (It literally takes no more than 10 mins to download, burn CE to an SD & actually have it completely configured, connected & running. If you know Kodi well too obviously you can fly through the configuration or even drop certain user data files from another device onto a USB stick & drop them into Kodi to save some additional config too, or you can still use a backup from another Kodi. All you really have to lose is a few hours testing & exploring the new possibilities, but the potential gains are significant . As always lol, my biggest regret is not doing it sooner .) Obviously many thanks to @Marty . As well as many others too of course who have posted up various information or experiences, I've been following @pusb87 's CoreELEC journey & testing quite closely under a few threads in particular. That's what eventually sold me to give it all another go recently, so mucho credit to him convincing me too, (albeit unknowingly) .

Trusted Helper just to add a few extra comments about Coreelec which i really like Samba and SSH both work without a hitch has a comprehensive CEC options setting menu ( not tested as i dont use CEC but i know a lot do ) It has an excellent built in backup /restore tool option. I used it to "transfer" succesfully and completely all my Corelec/Kodi set up from the U22 to the T5 without one hitch.

Access to remote NFS shares is functioning perfectly well & as expected for those that may use it with a NAS or other devices too. I even paired & sent a few files from an Android tablet over to CoreELEC using Bluetooth because I couldn't be bothered to get up off my backside & physically use a USB flash drive at the time lol . Also worked great & it was very quick. (My tablet actually reported that the Bluetooth connection with CE was for audio only but the file transfers all immediately went across without a hitch despite this.) Obviously CE does come with certain limitations when you're used to using a fully featured OS but the connectivity it does have built in works well, Kodi's file manager is sufficient for basic functions to get by with, or depending on what you need to do/use there may even be an official add-on available to offer extended functions too. Obviously we can dual boot if necessary but many will quite possibly have a secondary device running alongside on the same TV anyway or undoubtedly have a fully featured system not too far away. For such a minimalist interface etc., there's certainly one hell of a lot to like .

Great instructions, got it installed with ease! Just going to do a back up now from my Kodi set-up on the U22 and move it over to the T5

Have you had any success testing your multi-chan AAC files yet or are you still stuck with them??? I've been doing a little testing of the small handful of multi-chan AAC files I can find in my collection for you today & I may finally have some good news achieving proper decoding & output from the U22/T5 to our AVRs !! Let me know if you're still stuck or if you've already sorted it all out yourself to save me typing up a load of info you may already have .

My 5.1 AAC files now show on AVR as Linear PCM 5.1(3/2.1) [previously on u22 & T5 android Linear PCM 2.0] and 7.1 AAC files show as Linear PCM 7.1(3/4.1) Do you have different ? Last edited: Feb 1, 2021

Yes, I had very different depending on how you configured Kodi itself in CE. Initially I wasn't having much luck. Basically, the visual stream was originally coming through mostly OK but was stuttering slightly, but the audio stream was completely messed up. (It sounded like it was 5 times too slow & obviously way out of sync causing various issues.) In Android the audio decoder & passthrough output devices respectively are simply greyed out & obviously can't be adjusted at all, let alone adjusted independently. As I was trying to troubleshoot the AAC problem in CoreELEC on the U22 I remembered that the audio decoder & audio passthrough device options are user selectable like Windows Kodi. (Obviously I had to correctly set these for my AVR when I first configured Kodi in CE & I just set both options straight to the ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI setting without really thinking about it .) Then it occurred to me that I remembered seeing an option specifically for multi-chan PCM in the CE audio decoder choices too . So..... In CoreELEC system -> audio settings, set.... Audio decoder -> Audio output device - ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI Multi Ch PCM. Audio passthrough -> Passthrough output device - you can still leave that set independently to the required ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI, (as you probably already have it). You can also set the number of channels to your number of actual speakers as well (i.e 7.1) & also just leave your AVR set to A.F.D. mode for multi-chan AAC. (The Dolby Surround or DTS Neural X psuedo surround/upmixing settings aren't required as CoreELEC can achieve true AAC multi-chan surround & with PCM all audio is being correctly routed to the right speakers at the right time .) AAC 2.0 also works perfectly with these settings as well & using the Dolby Surround/DTS Neural X upmixing instead of A.F.D on our AVRs (whichever you prefer as they sound slightly different) also seems to be functioning as expected too. I then tested various files of differing types that would ordinarily require audio passthrough to the AVR & they too also continued to behave perfectly normally with the passthrough device being set independently to the main audio decoder device. SORTED !!! (Obviously, this simply can't be done in Android because the options are all greyed out & unavailable to choose. Windows Kodi has these different options too based on actual hardware subjectively or it can use software decoding too.) Yet another plus side of CE & hopefully you'll be able to properly enjoy much of your collection of AAC encoded files again. No switching back & forth between different settings each time or changing the number of channels as required etc., it's all good. I also had a quick look over the T5 too, the same settings are obviously present & can be adjusted in the exact same manner but I didn't get into any serious testing. (I'm kind of concentrating on the U22 at the moment although I realize this is a "T5 thread".) The T5 functions exactly the same anyway so make the same adjustments. You should finally be able to properly enjoy all of your AAC encoded files again without ever having to change apps, devices or any settings . Enjoy .

Thats exactly how mine in Coreelc is set up already on both T5 and U22 and as far as i can tell

Now your confusing me as you said you had very different. But I guess that was before you set Audio decoder -> Audio output device - ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI Multi Ch PCM. and Audio passthrough -> Passthrough output device ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI, am i right ??
