IS water wet?

It sounds like a trick question, but the debate around whether water can really be wet has caused a serious splash online.

Is water wet? The debate has split Twitter right down the middle

If you’re bored of arguing about Brexit or football with your relatives, then try this ultimate divisive issue to drive a wedge between your family.

Twitter users and YouTubers are drowning in back-and-forth arguments about the wetness of water, while topical debate website debate.org is split 51 – 49 per cent on the issue.

The question may not be as easy as it seems because of the definition of wetness, which some people are pointing to as proof that water can’t be wet.

According to the dictionary definition, wet means: “covered or saturated with water or another liquid.”

Nobody can agree whether water can really be wet… what do you think?

It’s impossible for water to be saturated, because it’s a liquid – so some people reckon that’s proof water can never be wet.

As one Twitter user explained: “Wetness is simply the feeling of water on something, i.e if you step in a puddle, your shoe becomes wet.

“As such, water itself cannot be wet, but items that have been doused in water can be.

“A correct statement would be ‘Water feels wet’, not ‘Water is wet’.”

But not everyone agrees.

One woman, clearly on the “yes”-team, took to Twitter to joke: “We leaving people who think water isn’t wet in 2017.”

An ally added: “If something isn’t wet, then it must be dry. Water isn’t dry. Therefore water is wet.”

But another Twitter user hit back: “What is wrong with u people?? WATER IS NOT WET.”

Meanwhile, one joked: “Imagine carrying a baby for 9 months just for them to think that water is wet.”

And not content with fighting one raging argument at a time, one wind-up merchant said: “We’re all worried about if water is wet but is fire burnt?”

This isn’t the first viral scuffle to drive a wedge between internet users.

Previously, millions debated whether or not a viral dress was blue and black or gold and white… and it became so famous that it has since been used in research by neuroscientists.

We also shared the odd picture of a shoe which seemed to be a case of “the dress” 2.0.
