Who hasn't been touched by the excitement that the UFC generates? Almost every weekend we can enjoy each of the fights and rounds that the most famous Mixed Martial Arts company offers us in their events.

However, not everyone is completely clear about some of the rules of their fights, how many rounds each bout includes and how long each round lasts.

UFC fights are sanctioned under rules established by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board (NJACB) under the name "Unified Mixed Martial Arts Rules", but other states such as Nevada, Louisiana and California also decided to adopt them.

How many rounds do UFC fights have?

Championship or "main event" fights last longer than regular UFC fights, although the maximum number of rounds is less than in other combat sports such as boxing. Fights last three rounds as long as it is a non-championship fight, while championship and main event fights are five rounds.

As for their duration, each round is five minutes with a one-minute break between rounds, so five-round fights can last up to 29 minutes, while three-round fights can last up to 17 minutes.

Most non-championship and non-main event fights have three rounds, so the main events or championship fights are the ones that are contested at the end of the card, which is why these fights generate more money, either through ticket purchases or Pay-Per-View (PPV).
