The sunny spells and April showers usually expected at this time of year have given way to snowfall in some parts of the UK overnight, meaning an unseasonably cold start to the week for some.

Southern parts of England and much of Wales will continue to experience ‘outbreaks of rain, sleet and some snow’ this morning according to the Met Office.

Over the weekend, parts of northeast England and North Yorkshire saw between 2 to 5cm of snowfall with lying snow in higher areas.

But is this snowfall truly unseasonal for April and when did it last snow during the spring month?

The last time the UK recorded an April this cold was eight years ago, in 2013.

In 2021, parts of the UK saw temperatures fall to -4C at the beginning of the month, marking the coolest start to April in eight years.

Then, last night, Scotland recorded its coldest ever night in April for the last eight years as temperatures dropped to almost -10C.

BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood tweeted: ‘With the overnight low in Tulloch Bridge currently sitting at -9.4C, that makes it the coldest April night in the UK since 2013.’

However, while we might be experiencing one of the colder Aprils in the last decade, it is not uncommon for there to be snowfall this month.

According to the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading: ‘During 1968-2020 there were 23 April months without any snowfall. Many falls of sleet or snow tend to be slight in April and snowfall in April is tending to become less prevalent.’

That means snowfall has been reported in 44% of Aprils over the last 52 years in Reading.

‘Nowadays lying snow (covering more than half the ground) rarely occurs on more than one morning in April; since 1968 lying snow has only been reported in 1989 and 2008 – 6 cm depth on 6 April 2008 and 1 cm depth on 5 April 1989.’
