Spring 2018: When does Spring start?

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for snow and ice for Scotland, north-west England, Wales, and south-west England.

Forecasters said lighter showers will pass on Monday but further weather warnings for high winds, snow and rain have been put in place for the west of Scotland, Northern Ireland and south west England for Tuesday.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: "On Monday evening the next band of rain will start to push its way in during the night bringing rain and some snow where it meets colder air.

"Where there are clear skies further east we'll start to see frost and ice developing once again.

"For some of us it will be a cold start to the day but for all of us umbrellas will need to be at the ready."

Last week saw the mercury plunge to chilly lows, with early morning temperatures of -6.4C recorded in Shoreham on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the mercury fell to -9.9C in Shap, Cumbria, overnight and -7.6C in Sennybridge, on the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons.

Temperatures on the UK’s coldest night of 2018 so far were lows of -13.7C.

When does Spring 2018 start?

Depending upon which definition you use, there are actually two different dates that the mark the first day of spring.

Astronomical seasons refer to the position of Earth's orbit in relation to the sun taking into account equinoxes and solstices. 

While meteorological seasons are instead based on the annual temperature cycle and measure the meteorological state.

Under this definition, seasons are defined as spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November) and winter (December, January, February).

March 1, 2018 is the first day of the meteorological spring, and it ends on May 31 2018.

March 20, 2018 is the first day of the astronomical spring, and will end on June 21.

When does the weather get warmer in the UK?

Spring in the UK is all about new life, with plants springing up after the harsh, bitter conditions of winter.

From about March-time, the temperatures will start to get warmer.
