Location and geography

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe that borders Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west. Romania and Moldova lie to the southwest, Belarus to the north and Russia to the east. In the south, the country is bordered by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov along a coastline of around 2,782 km. The total area of the country is around 603,550 square kilometers.

The geography is predominantly characterized by wide plains and fertile loess landscapes. These lowlands belong to the Eastern European Plain and are used intensively for agriculture. Ukraine is also known as the breadbasket of Europe and supplies agricultural produce to many parts of the world. The Dnipro river system, which crosses the country from north to south, is of central importance. It irrigates large areas inland.

The Carpathian Mountains rise in the west with forested low mountain ranges and alpine relief. The highest mountain peak "Howerla" with an altitude of 2,061 meters is also located here in the Chornohora. Overall, however, the country lies relatively low at an altitude of only 175 meters above sea level. Climate in Ukraine

Ukraine has a temperate continental climate, characterized by significant temperature variations throughout the year. In general, the country has cold winters and warm summers. In the north, the average temperature is -6 °C in January and 19 °C in July. Eastward, the temperature range becomes wider, with cities such as Kharkiv experiencing colder winters and hotter summers compared to the western regions. The Carpathian Mountains to the west have milder temperatures but higher precipitation. The southern oblasts on the Black Sea tend to be more Mediterranean, so have mild winters and hot summers with temperatures up to 30 degrees. Urbanization

Ukraine's high level of urbanization was mainly created in the early 20th century. Today, around 69.5 percent of the population live in cities. Large industrial cities based on coal, steel and mechanical engineering production developed particularly in the east and south-east. Regions such as the Donbas and the Dnipro region developed dense urban structures, while the west became more small-town and rural.
