History

People have lived in Ukraine for thousands of years. One of the first powerful groups was Kyivan Rus’, a medieval kingdom that began in what is now Kyiv. Over time, different empires and countries ruled parts of Ukraine, including Poland, the Ottoman Empire, and Russia.

In the 20th century, Ukraine faced tough times. The Holodomor, a man-made famine in the 1930s, killed millions. Later, during World War II, Ukraine was invaded by Nazi Germany and then controlled by the Soviet Union.

Ukraine became independent in 1991 when the Soviet Union fell. In recent years, it's been in the news due to its conflict with Russia, especially since the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2022 Russia-Ukraine War.
