Messenger’s “Ignore messages” feature comes in handy when you want to avoid receiving chat messages from a particular friend or contact. It works differently from the Mute and Block option already available in Facebook Messenger.

When you ignore someone on Messenger, the message thread is moved from your Inbox to the Spam folder in Message Requests. New messages from the ignored person will still arrive though, but without any notification.

Unlike blocking, you can read the ignored messages, similar to how you would read messages from people you are not friends with on Facebook.

Messenger does not notify the person when you ignore their chat or when you view their ignored messages. If you have ignored a message, the only way to move ignore messages back to the inbox is by replying to the ignored chat.

While there is no harm in replying to unignore a message, most users are hesitant to do so. This is because replying or sending a message might unintentionally start a conversation even if you do not wish to.

Unspam Messenger chat without replying

If you still want to unignore messages in Messenger without replying, it is possible. I have found a workaround that allows you to undo ignore messages on Messenger without sending a message.

To unignore a conversation in Facebook Messenger without chatting, you will need to use Messenger Lite. Unlike the regular Messenger app, the Lite version of Messenger offers the ability to unignore someone without sending a message.

The only downside is that Messenger Lite is available only for Android devices. Therefore, if you use Messenger on iPhone or desktop then you have to follow the traditional way.

How to unignore someone on Messenger without replying

1. Install Messenger Lite on your Android phone. (Tip: Download the APK and sideload it if the app is not available in your region.)
2. Open the app and log in with your Facebook account.
3. Tap the “People” tab and search for the person whose conversation you want to unignore silently.
4. Tap the person’s name in the search results.
5. Select the “Accept” option at the bottom.

The ignored conversation will automatically move back to your Chats list.

How to unignore messages (Standard Way)

Here’s the standard method to unignore messages:

1. Navigate to Message Requests in Messenger and open the “Spam” tab.
2. Open the conversation that you want to unignore or remove from spam.
3. Reply or send a message to the person, and the chat will move back to your Messenger inbox.
