Unlockable Character | McLeodGaming Wiki - Fandom

An unlockable character is a character in the Super Smash Flash series that is not available at the start of the game (unlike a starter character), but must be unlocked. Unique criteria must be met in order to unlock a certain character. In Super Smash Flash, the player must accomplish a particular in-game feat and once complete, a message will display: "Warning! Challenger Approaching!" with a white question mark block over the black silhouette of the unlockable character. By completing the in-game feat and defeating the opponent in a 1-stock match on Final Destination, the character becomes playable.

Unlockable characters were initially present in early versions Super Smash Flash 2, though it is now unconfirmed whether they will continue to appear.

In Super Smash Flash 2

Unknown This section contains information of a formerly confirmed feature.

The original source that confirmed the subject has otherwise become obsolete, outdated or deprecated and has yet to be reconfirmed by an official modern source.

Unlockable characters were first introduced in v0.7 of the SSF2 demo, in which they acted similarly to their function in the original Super Smash Flash. The main differences included how the "Challenger Approaching" screen showed a silhouette of the character rather than blocking them completely, and the unlock match would be played on a specific home stage of the character.

With the release of Beta, it was stated that all characters added in subsequent releases (in addition to the then unlockable Sandbag) would be unlockable in the full version of the game. However, all characters, including those that had previously been unlockable, were made starter characters in Beta 1.2 with the intention of them becoming unlockable again in the following major revision. As of Beta 1.4, all characters remain available from the start, and it has not been confirmed whether this is still planned to change in the future, thus leaving the fate of unlockable characters unknown.

The following characters were unlockable prior to Beta 1.2 and initially stated to remain that way in the full version of the game.

Character Universe Criteria Unlock stage
Pichu Pokémon Pokémon symbol Play a match in any game mode (except for Training) in which a player-controlled Pikachu accumulates at least 172% damage. Pokémon Colosseum
Sandbag Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros. symbol Complete Classic using a random character on Normal difficulty or higher without using continues. Waiting Room
Win a match online against a player who either has unlocked Sandbag or has won an online match against a developer.[1] N/A

In demo versions

Prior to Beta, characters introduced as unlockable characters would only remain that way temporarily, becoming starter characters in subsequent versions. The following characters were unlockable in early demos for the sake of their initial inclusions.

Character Universe Criteria Unlock stage Version
Black Mage FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY symbol Play 10 Group matches. Chaos Shrine v0.7
Captain Falcon F-ZERO F-ZERO symbol Win a Group match with every other character but him. Sand Ocean v0.8av0.8b
Jigglypuff Pokémon Pokémon symbol Clear all original 10 events. Pokémon Stadium 3 v0.9a

Trivia

  • In the original "Warning! Challenger Approaching!" screen for SSF2, the silhouette of the McLeodGaming's fist logo could be seen.
  • The Challenger Approaching Alarm since demo v0.9a was ripped from Super Smash Bros. Brawl onwards.

Notes

  1. Meeting this unlock criteria would immediately unlock Sandbag without requiring the player to challenge it in a 1-stock match.
