Urine collection: cytology

Back to main list

Collection notes

NOTE: The first specimen of urine for the day is not suitable for cytology. The specimen can be taken at any other time of the day.

  • Drink 2 large glasses of water and wait until your bladder feels full
  • DO NOT collect the FIRST PART of the urine you pass. This urine always contains contaminating organisms
  • Collect the MIDSTREAM or middle flow of urine into the jar provided until the jar is at least half full
  • Label the container with your surname, first name, date of birth and date and time of collection

Collection procedure

Obtain a sterile urine jar from your doctor or your nearest Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology collection centre. For your nearest collection centre, please refer to your request form, visit our locations map, or call Patient Services Support on 1300 732 030.

If you feel that you didn’t collect your urine properly, obtain another urine jar and try again.

Refrigerate the sample after collection and bring it to your nearest collection centre as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT: Do not collect the first part of the urine you pass.

3-day collection

If your doctor has asked for a series of three urines to be taken, please repeat this procedure for the next two consecutive days. Ideally, submit each specimen on the day of collection. If there is any delay between collection and submission, please refrigerate the specimen.
