History, Information, and Value of 1900 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1900-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Like many dollars of the era, 1900-O Morgan Silver Dollars were not needed when they were minted. Many were relegated to long-term storage. Bags dribbled out of storage starting in the 1930s, with a much larger dispersal in 1962 to 1964 when hundreds of thousands of 1900-O dollars entered the marketplace. Many dollars were destroyed during private silver melts in the late 1970s. However, the 1900-O is still plentiful in Mint State and much less so in circulated worn grades. The strike varies from weak to quite sharp. New Orleans dollars struck this year are from the old-style die with well-defined breast feathers. The mint luster is usually frosty and attractive. Branch Mints did not produce proofs. A More Modern Coin That is Elusive: Not a common date in circulated grades but available in EF and AU to those with the time to search. Any Grade Will Be Available: Readily available in Uncirculated from MS-60 up the scale to MS-65 and beyond. Look for a nicely struck and fully lustrous MS-65 for great satisfaction, as the date is highly affordable at this level.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1900.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
