Klaus Had To Die So Hope Could Live

During season 5, the Hollow continued to have a stronghold on the Mikaelsons. 15-year-old Hope cast a spell that transferred the Hollow from her family into her, and the darkness became so overpowering it endangered her life. To save his daughter's life, Klaus had the Saltzman twins siphon the Hollow from Hope and place it in his body. To eradicate the Hollow for good, Klaus decided to sacrifice himself.

Klaus had no other choice but to die by suicide after absorbing the Hollow. If he remained alive, the evil force would amplify his darkest impulses, and he would likely turn evil. His family would be the first to fall, and Klaus had come too far to turn back into what he fought so long to hold in. Elijah, who finally achieved his lifelong goal of witnessing Klaus' redemption, remained loyal to him until the end. Each Mikaelson brother drove a White Oak stake into the heart of the other.

How Did Klaus Influence Hope In Legacies?

Two years later, Hope still questioned her father's fate. In Legacies season 1, episode 7, "Death Keeps Knocking On My Door," the Necromancer's presence only amplified her anxieties regarding Klaus. The Necromancer confronted Hope about her fears regarding her father:

"You want to know if he's at peace or if he's suffering. Regretting his sacrifice. After all, he did die to save your life."

This question also plagued fans, who weren't thrilled about the antihero's death in The Originals season 5 finale. Eventually, the Necromancer tells Hope that Klaus watches over her every day, that he died with love in his heart, and that he doesn't regret his choice. Sadly, Klaus won't find peace until Hope does. Klaus wasn't sucked into a black void of nothingness, but peace still eluded him.

There's also no mention of Elijah, who might have reunited with Hayley Marshall. There is no "Other Side," but Klaus lingers in a state of purgatory. Does Klaus deserve peace? He may have become a devoted father, but he still committed innumerable despicable acts - many against members of his own family. Klaus wasn't exactly someone who deserved a happy afterlife, but fans wouldn't have it any other way.

Joseph Morgan Initially Said He Wouldn't Return

The Necromancer's revelation provided Hope with some closure. She decided to write Klaus a letter in honor of Remembrance Day. She promised to try and find peace within herself, and she looked forward to the day when he was no longer with her. Alaric warned Hope the Necromancer would use her parents to manipulate her. It appeared that Hope might never know more about his fate, but then Klaus made a shocking return in the Legacies series finale. This return went against what actor Joseph Morgan initially promised.

"You can hold your breath as long as you want ... I just feel like to come back as a ghost or a flashback or something, for me, that journey, that story has ended. That's the complete story, and it just doesn't feel right to me to do that ... I think Julie [Plec] feels the same. It just feels like it would be strange, like a little forced ... I don't know what the scene could be that it would be exciting enough and epic enough after the journey that he's had."

However, they made the return work anyway. For most of Legacies, people only talk about Klaus. However, the show didn't want to undo his sacrifice to save his daughter because it was the ultimate redemption finale for the character. When Hope and her family finally laid his ashes to rest in Mystic Falls in Legacies season 4, episode 15, "Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found," his spirit could finally rest. That eventually led to the series's final scene with Klaus and Hope.

This return did nothing that could hurt the legacy that his sacrifice left behind. Landon wanted to relay a message to Hope from the beyond, and he used a projector screen to do it. Klaus was on the screen, and he looked happy and content. He lets Hope know what she means to him and the burdens of immortality. He also said she might not always make the right choices, but she was his peace, calling her, "My dearest Hope, my littlest wolf, my miracle child." Legacies is about Klaus's child and this was her perfect ending.
