Alright, since the debut of Sailor Moon Crystal episode 8 and Venus’ introduction, I’ve gotten quite a few questions from confused fans. So I’ve decided to make a post to answer everyone’s questions. Some parts of this post will be compiled from previous posts of mine.

Sailor Venus claiming to be the Moon Princess is all a ploy to protect the true Moon Princess, Princess Serenity. Sailor Venus is the leader of the Senshi, and as such, it’s her duty to ensure the Princess’ safety above all else.

While Sailor Venus existed back in the Silver Millennium, Sailor Moon did not. In fact, Sailor Moon was never supposed to exist in the first place, because that would mean that Princess Serenity would constantly be in harm’s way. She’s not meant to fight, that’s what her guardians are for. However, when she was reborn, drastic measures needed to be taken in order to ensure both her and the planet Earth’s safety. So, Luna trained Usagi as a Sailor Soldier in order to protect and hide her from the enemy.

However, Usagi is still very new to being a Senshi and is still learning how to master her powers; she still needs time to train and develop, time that the Senshi don’t have. By contrast, Sailor Venus is by far the most experienced warrior; she awoke when she was 13, a full year before the other girls, and spent months fighting against the Dark Kingdom and foiling their attempts at stealing energy. She knows what they’re capable of and how to deal with them.

So, Venus, Artemis, and Luna came up with the idea to use Venus as a decoy (Later on, Luna had her memories of this plot sealed before she went to train Usagi so that she wouldn’t accidentally screw it up). By using Venus as a decoy, they were hoping to throw the Dark Kingdom off the trail and squeeze out as much time as they could. Everything Venus does is to protect Usagi.

As for her crescent moon marking, Venus is masquerading as the Moon Princess in order to protect the real one, Usagi. Because she’s supposedly the Moon Princess, she wouldn’t be very believable if she didn’t have the mark of the Silver Millennium on her forehead. She needs to hide the fact that she’s really Venus’ (the planet, that is) representative and guardian, which is why she didn’t say “Venus Power, Make Up” at the start of her transformation and why a crescent moon appeared on her forehead instead of the Venus mark and a tiara.
