Sac & Story county IAThe best answer is to go to the tavern and play cards til it is warm outside. If there is a hose from air intake on engine to the compressor, take it loose and pour air brake anti freeze in there slow with engine at idle. (Of course, towards the compressor, towards the diesel engine, it would probably run wild.) I am surprised that there is air brake anti freeze on the shelf in your area.Edited by E718 1/12/2011 10:24

Dry county.....no taverns.....don't drink, I can make a big enough fool out of myself without it.Seriously. It's just ethanol.....isn't it. Truck is cabover, and I was wondering if there was an easier place. Thanks and stay warm,John

Take off the air service line at the trailer & pour a little air brake antifreeze in the glad hand.Edited by boog 1/12/2011 17:20

Sac & Story county IAMaybe methanol? I dunno.. I never quite understood the difference between ethanol and methanol. One makes you blind and the other makes you stupid is all I know.

mwThey make an air brake antifreeze, take the output line off of the air compressor and dump some in the hose and let it run for awhile.

UP / Thumb of MichiganIn cold weather here, we drain the air tanks daily. Or twice daily. 3 times a day is better if there's any sign of water. Every driver I ever hired promised to do that anyway. None did until they were along the road froze up. If nothing else, ALWAYS drain the wet tank as often as possible. Usually the tank on the right side of the truck, but not always. Its the first tank from the compressor. Anti-freeze after it freezes may or may not thaw things out. When you do get it going, I'd suggest draining the tanks every night and adding anti-freeze (doesn't take a lot, maybe a tea spoon full) every morning to the first tank every morning. We had some plumbing made up to do that easily, or else you can buy an alcohol evaporator.Edited by pat-michigan 1/12/2011 17:37

What I've done in the past is feed a mist of air brake antifreeze into the compressor intake. A FINE MIST. Small amount... It's probably not great stuff for the compressor but it will vaporize into the system and do it's job quick. Main difference between methyl hydrate and air brake antifreeze is some rubber conditioners in the antifreeze. Otherwise it's pure methyl hydrate... Rod

UP / Thumb of MichiganWe had air dryers on everything we ran in the winter, but still drain the tanks. At least the wet tank.

North Dakotaif your going to put any air brake antifreeze in a truck that has an air dryer put it in after the dryer. that stuff will eat the inside out of the filters and then the filters aren't doing any thing. this is what most mechanics here tell me and thats I've been doing. also change the dryer filter and dump vale regularly and of course drain tanks. and don't use that air brake antifreeze to much it will start to dry out and thing thats rubber in side the valves on your trailers and trucks and you will have a bunch more problems. this is from personal experience. one bottle should last you a long time.
