Ne CONot real sure if its safe to stay theres kind of a mustrard smell by furnaces? I cracked a few windows and shut it off at the propane tank. We've got monoxide protecters, what to do? Got electric heaters to get us thru the night.

Amherst WIShut the valve off by the furnace. I would say as long as the whole house doesn't reek of it I think you'll be fine. It is just a faint smell by the furnace right?

Middlesex County, OntarioIf a friend called me and asked me what to do I'd tell him to get a motel for the night. If there's something leaking at the furnace and the valve at the tank isn't 100% closed (old or just doesn't seal perfect) your house could blow up with your family inside. It'll probably be fine. I'd stay and run the electric heat.

SW SaskatchewanPropane contains an odorant to make you aware of a leak----but it tends to accumulate in the last of the propane in the tank---thus a stronger odor when your tank runs dry is more or less normal. I guess I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it given the circumstances but it would still be wise to check that your tank is really empty and that it is not a leaking line instead.

Central SD+ what redman said. It smells that way because people usually never run their tank completely out so the Ethyl mercaptan builds up and smells worse at the last few percent of the tank. If your tank is actually at the last few percent than its normal

NW WashingtonJust remember that propane is heavier than air and tends to accumulate in lower areas in the house.

That just happened to us. We are on a keep fill and when we came home from AZ, Dave talked to the propane guy and told him that there was plenty in the tank. Well, apparently he read it wrong. I kept telling him that there was a gas leak and he said that it was probably a dead mouse. I looked and looked for that critter and then the water went cold. Propane guy said just what a couple other posters said about the settling and the smell.

Like others have said, the odorant settles to the bottom and gets strong when the tank runs low. They put about a liter or so in a semi load. Working on old LP tanks that never ran dry I have gotten that much liquid out of a 500 gallon tank. I'm guessing you have a pilot light on something. When it burns it really gets your attention. That is the purpose of adding it.If you have shut off the tank you are in good shape. Be warned, a good LP guy will do a leak test of your system before putting you back in service. If he doesn't, consider changing companies. That is a basic safety test you never avoid.edit: OH! The post above about reading the tank wrong reminded me. When you check the gauge always bang the lid against the tank a couple times. Gauges and dials can stick and give a false reading. We used to always be able to tell when Duane had delivered to a tank with a sticky gauge. He'd put a rock under the lid to tap on the gauge.

I have 2 -500 gal tanks, an end fill and a top fill. I leave both tanks turned on. Each tank has its own regulator and they must be set slightly different. The end fill always uses up first and I will get a strong gas smell in the house before the top fill tank kicks in. This thread reminds me I should check the tanks and call the propane guy with a report. I hope prices will stay down for summer fill.
