The second season of the critically acclaimed shonen anime series Vinland Saga will be released in January 2023 and will be animated by studio MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan: The Final Season).

The first trailer, which was also released alongside the release date announcement, features a lot of new characters. The trailer also offered us a glimpse at series protagonist Thorfinn looking slightly older than we last saw him at the end of season one.

MAPPA will be taking over the production of this season from Wit Studio, who animated the first season. Previously, MAPPA took over the production for the Attack on Titan anime from Wit Studio as well.

Although the second season is being animated by a different studio, many of the key staff members from the first season will be returning, including director Shuhei Yabuta and character designer Yusuke Takeda.

Vinland Saga <br /> <br /> This anime, adapted from the manga series by Makoto Yukimura and produced by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan), is set in Viking-occupied England, which has led more than a few observers to deem it something of a “spiritual sequel” to History Channel’s Vikings. IGN praised the show for its methodical pacing, masterfully-crafted art style, thrilling score, and “gorgeously-directed and bloody” battle scenes. The show revolves mainly around hot-headed young warrior Thorfinn, who seeks revenge against his scheming commander, Askeladd. As we wrote last year, “if Vinland Saga keeps up this same quality of the animation, dialogue, characterization, and music, it feels like a classic in the making. A show with real, palpable, fleshed-out characters that you’ll quickly grow to love, living in a harsh but beautifully-captured world brought to life by stellar art and soothing melodies. Vinland Saga is an epic in every sense of the word.”

The first season of Vinland Saga was released in 2019 and is one of the most critically acclaimed and highest-rated shonen anime series of the past decade. The anime has a very impressive 8.73 score on MyAnimeList and won the award for best drama anime at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards for its incredible story.

<b>Vinland Saga (2019)</b><br /><br /> An old Viking is ripped from his peaceful life in order to protect his village from a looming war. Little does he know that his young son, Thorfinn, stowed away on his ship and they depart for a tragic adventure that will set the child on a bloody, painful path for revenge. Though the action in Vinland Saga is great, its characters and the dark paths many of them walk are what make this anime stand out.

No doubt many anime fans are excited to watch the continuation of this adaptation of Makoto Yukimura’s epic manga series.
