Loosely based on the activities of crusading federal prosecutor of financial crimes Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and his legal battles with hedge fund manager Steve Cohen of S.A.C. Capital Advisors, the series was created by Ocean’s Thirteen and Rounders co-writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien and The New York Times’ financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin, no relation to The West Wing’s Aaron Sorkin.

At the centre of the show is a cashed-up battle of wits between U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) who is trying to bring down hedge fund king Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Damian Lewis). The war between the two powerful New York figures turns Wall Street into a battleground.

The two leads are astounding, delivering powerful career best performances. No mean feat considering that Giamatti has headlined the Golden Globe winning John Adams and was nominated for an Oscar for Cinderella Man and Lewis, who gained notoriety as the “is he? Isn’t he” terrorist in Homeland, has played Henry VIII in Wolf Hall and went to war in Band Of Brothers. When the pair face each other off it’s a chest-beating master class in hard stares and brutish banter.

The talent heavy cast also includes Maggie Siff (Mad Men, Sons Of Anarchy), Malin Akerman (Watchmen, The Comeback) and Toby Leonard Moore (Daredevil, John Wick) but Billions is always about the main protagonists and the financial feuding.

Billions is a binge-worthy, thought-provoking diatribe about money and what it does to people. In an era when greed is still good, the denizens of Wall Street still make for fascinating viewing.
