Cooperatively Managed

In 2001, the District purchased the property surrounding the first-magnitude Weeki Wachee Spring from the City of St. Petersburg. The acquisition was in support of former Governor Bush's "Springs Initiative," under which strategies were established for the protection and restoration of Florida's springs, including placing them in public ownership. On November 1, 2008, the District entered into a lease agreement with the Florida Parks Service for their management of the property as a state park.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is one of Florida's oldest roadside attractions. Founded in 1947 by Newton Perry, Weeki Wachee has been the mecca for mermaid enthusiasts. The magical allure of the mermaids swimming in a first-magnitude spring has drawn visitors from around the world. Today, visitors can still witness the magic of the mermaids, take a river boat cruise, and canoe or kayak on the Weeki Wachee River.

The 538-acre park features a first-magnitude spring and a 400-seat submerged theater to view the live mermaid show.

Buccaneer Bay offers a fun-filled flume ride for thrill seekers of all ages. The white sandy beach area and covered picnic pavilions provide a relaxing day for your entire family. Weeki Wachee's animal shows provide audiences with an entertaining and educational look at domesticated birds and reptiles.
