How to calculate your grade
In the simplest mode, the grade calculator takes in marks on an exam, test, homework assignment, or project, and converts it to a percentage grade and a letter grade using typical conversions between the two types of grades. For example, if you have 24/30 on an exam (24 marks out of a maximum of 30), the corresponding percentage grade is 80%. The math is fairly simple: divide 100 by 30 to get 3.33(3), then multiply 24 by 3.33(3) to get approximately 80.
For the calculator to do the math for you, just enter the exam score in the "Scored" field, and the maximum score on the exam in the "Out of" field, and press "Calculate". The calculator will return the percentage grade and its corresponding letter grade, according to common convention in which anything below 60% gets an F, and the range between 60% and 100% is equally divided among the letter grades. See the percentage to grade table for reference.
How will an exam affect my course grade?
If you've just got an exam grade, homework or project grade, and you want to know how it will affect your current course grade, the grade calculator can help you find out. You will need to know one of two things to proceed, besides the exam percentage score or letter grade. If it is a final exam, you may know its weight in the overall course grading, e.g. it could be 30%, 40%, or 50%, and rarely higher than that. If that is the case, simply enter the weight and calculate the new course grade.
If this is not a final exam, but you know how many grades you've received so far and that they are equally weighted, then you can enter these numbers and the tool will output your new course grade. For example, if you are asking yourself "how much will a 60% affect my grade if I have 94%", then enter the weight of that 60% or enter how many grades made up the 94% current grade to find out how a 60% exam will affect your grade.
How to calculate a course grade
Using this tool as a weighted grade calculator you can calculate your current weighted grade or unweighted grade in terms of percentage, letter grade, or GPA. The tool will also output the weight of all remaining exams and assignments, and has the option of calculating the minimum score you need to obtain on a final exam in order to achieve a target overall grade for a class or course.
To use the calculator, enter the number of grades you currently have, then each grade as a percent or letter grade, and finally the weight each grade adds towards the overall. If no weights are entered, the weights are assumed equal and the calculator will output the unweighted average grade. Otherwise a weighted average grade will be produced in terms of percentage, GPA, and a letter grade.
What grade do I need on my final?
If you haven't yet got a score on the final exam for a given class, you can use this tool as a final grade calculator. In order to achieve a given grade goal for the entire class, course, or semester, a given minimum grade is required on the final exam, depending on both the weighted average grade to that date, and the weight of the final on the overall grade. This minimum required score can be calculated using the following formula:
Required final score = (Grade Goal - Current Grade x (100% - Weight of Final(%))) / Weight of Final(%)
The current grade is calculated based on the weighted average of all marks to date. The weight of the final test is calculated as 100% minus the combined weight of all grades to date. Therefore, if the combined weight of the scores you enter is 65% then the final exam will have a weight of 100% - 65% = 35%.
How to convert a grade to percentage?
This calculator uses the following table to convert letter grades to percentages. Note that since this is not a universally applicable table, ideally one would want to know the exact percentage scores and use these as input for the calculator, otherwise the results may be slightly off.
| Letter Grade | Percentage | GPA |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100% | 4.3 |
| A | 93-96% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90-92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87-89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83-86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80-82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77-79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73-76% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70-72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67-69% | 1.3 |
| D | 63-66% | 1.0 |
| D- | 60-62% | 0.7 |
| F | 0-59% | 0.0 |
Again, it is our recommendation that you check with your local school or college and enter percentage grades instead of letter grades for the most accurate calculation. Note that while U.S. colleges and schools are likely to use the above grading, educational institutions in other countries may use a vastly different GPA scale.
