FAQs

Is IBAN the same as BIC?

No. Whilst these codes perform similar functions, there is an important difference between the two.

IBANs (International Bank Account Numbers) are used to identify individual accounts involved in international transactions, whilst BIC/SWIFT codes are used to identify specific banks.

How do I find my IBAN and BIC code?

Both your IBAN and BIC codes can be found i) on your paper statements ii) by logging into your online banking account, either on a computer or on a mobile banking app.

Is the SWIFT code the same for all branches?

This depends on the bank. Some banks use an 8-character BIC (BIC8), which means that they use the same SWIFT code for all their branches, whereas other banks use 11-character BICs (BIC11).

The extra three characters in these codes tend to be numerical, and they represent a particular bank branch or office.

Do all bank accounts have a SWIFT code?

Whilst most banks have a BIC / SWIFT code assigned to them, there are some financial institutions that do not use them.

A number of smaller banks and credit unions in the United States do not connect to the SWIFT network, which means that they do not use international routing codes.

What our clients think

Ian Holdcroft, Co-founder, Shackleton

Ian Holdcroft, Co-founder, Shackleton

"Over the last year, uncertainty has added extra stress around planning as no one really knew what would happen with duties and VAT etc. Using somebody like Moneycorp, you can hedge some of that risk, and you have access to an internal team of analysts who are closer to the action in terms of understanding the likelihood of sterling weakening or strengthening versus the dollar or euro, which is really helpful. It’s a heck of a lot better than the service you get from a high-street bank, for instance."
