What are iPhone alerts, notifications, badges, and banners?
Your iPhone will alert you when there's a message, voicemail, email or other updates. Your iPhone can alert you with a sound, or a text alert on your screen. There are different alert styles notifications, banners, and badges. You can also choose to not have any type of alerts on your iPhone by modifying settings.
How it worksAlerts can show on your iPhone's screen, and by making a sound alert, or neither. When you receive a new message or phone call, you will be notified by a sound, banner, or pop-up window that displays the details.
Turning alerts on or offTurning alerts on or off on your iPhone can be found in Settings. 1.) Click on "Settings" 2.) Go to "Notifications". Once you click on Notifications, you will see a list of "Notification Style's". 3.) Scroll down to the Notification Style you wish to change, and click to open tab. 4.) Next, you will see a list of options. We will go through those options and what they mean here:Allow Notifications-- Follow steps 1-3. Next, click the circle next to "Allow Notifications" so that it slides to the right. This section when green indicates that alerts are on, and additional settings will appear. To turn off ALL alerts, make sure the circle cursor is positioned to the left, with nothing appearing below it.

Show in Notification Center-- The notification center is located on the top of your iPhone. It can be accessed by using your finger to swipe down from the top of the screen to the bottom. To change whether or not you want alerts (messages and updates) to appear in your phone's notification center, first follow steps 1-3 listed above. Then, click the circle next to, "Allow Notifications" so that it slides to the right. This section when green indicates that alerts will appear in the Notification Center. To turn off these alerts, make sure the circle cursor is positioned to the left.Sounds-- These settings have an effect on the sound you wish to hear when receiving an alert (messages). By clicking on the "Sounds" tab under Notifications, you can change the Alert tone to change the sound you hear when a new message arrives. You can also customize the vibration of the sound by scrolling to the top of Ringtones and clicking on the "Vibration" tab.Badge App Icon-- Badges are little numbers you see in the corner of an icon. This on/off setting decides whether you see a badge with the number of unread new messages.Show on Lock Screen-- This setting modifies whether or not you see an alert, or the first line of a message, while your phone is locked.Alert Style When Unlocked-- In this section, you will see three types of alert styles that will appear when your iPhone is unlocked. The first option is labeled "none". This means you will not receive any type of alert other than a sound alert if you choose (Please see sounds to change settings). Your second choice is labeled "banners". By selecting this preference, you will see a banner appear at the top of the screen and go away automatically. Banners alert you when there is a new message. Lastly, the third style is "alerts". Choosing "alerts" for your notification settings requires action before the alert goes away, and will pop-up in the middle of your iPhone's screen.
To my way of thinkingAlerts are perfect for anyone who doesn't want to miss a message or update. The different alert styles help you distinguish between specific notifications. If you are someone on the go and work partly from your iPhone, alerts are great for you to be able to view a message without having to open it right away or to know how many emails you have based on the badge icon. Stay on track with messages, emails and more by modifying your alert styles and how you want to be notified when you receive a new message.
