Linked contacts are simply contacts that are unified with simliar contacts in your iphone's address book. If you have merged facebook contacts or contacts from icloud or other devices into your contacts on your iphone, you may have noticed some of your contacts repeat with only the partical information available. With contact Links, this issue is resolved. What you should do is go to your contacts App via the Phone App or directly via the Contacts App. Find the contact that you would be the master contact. Press edit on the upper right hand side of the contact. Once you are in the edit screen, scroll down until you get to linked contacts. Press Link contacts. You'll noticed that your in the contacts again. Find the contact you want to link to, and press link on the upper right hand side. Than you'll go back to the edit page of the original contact. However, you'll noticed that it will say unified contact. Scroll down to the bottom to Linked contacts to verify that the contact has linked. Once you have determined that the contact has linked, press done. The contact is linked and you will notice that only the one contact is showing now. Your done.

I wish I had known this feature is ONLY for linking the exact SAME contacts. I first did this thinking I could "link" related contacts such as those in the same family, or business. Unfortunately, when I did this, every contact linked to another contact disappeared from my contact list. Apple should have a warning message about linking dissimilar names!

Yes, DJ is correct. Whatever contact you link to makes it disappear from your contact list and instead links it under the contact you originally linked it to.
I agree, very misleading and could cause a lot of unnecessary aggravation to a user that doesnt notice the true function of "link".
It would be nice, however to have an option to actually "link" contacts by their similarities and not have them erased in the contact list...
C'mon Apple, lets see it on iOS 7.0.1!!

I use groups to link people together for family, clubs or work. An app that has made this easy to manage on the iPad is ContactsXL. I have around 2000 contacts and never had a problem. I use a prefix on the group name to organise the groups more usefully. This makes it easier for newsletters or mail outs. Two apps that utilise the native contacts and groups are "Mailer" and "Awesome Mails".

My problem is similar. I didn't know what linked contacts meant. I linked two different people. A short time later, I used FaceTime to call one of the people. BOTH linked persons' phones rang! I realized what I had done, so I went back and unlinked them. NOW the problem is that when I text one person, BOTH people get the message! I have tried deleting both contacts completely and creating new ones. That didn't help. I have shut down my phone and restarted it. No help. Could it be something with the two people and their iPhones? I'm at a loss.

Hi ocugrad
I have the problem that some contacts (don't know which or how many) are linked and so I am getting incorrect information when I call or receive a call.
Is there a way to "unlink" other than manually one-by-one?
Is there some sort of sort on Linked that is available so I can unlink all contacts?
THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM

The word "link" sounded like it made a link between two contacts, NOT that it permanently confused the contacts.
I need to know how to UNDO this disaster right now, I need to know who's getting messages I create for work.

Yes there is a way. Simply go back to the contacts that you have linked together. Press edit and scroll down to where it says unlink contacts.
