What are the lights on a curling stone?

The lights are a tracking system to ensure the athletes release the stone before the first hog line. Both teams must release the stone before passing the red line.

A heat sensor is embedded into the ice and will be triggered if your hand continues to hold onto the handle. If you breach the line each stone has batteries to power these sensors and the line will turn the lights red.

Although it rarely happens the lights are essential to make the game fair.

What does hammer mean in the Winter Olympics?

The hammer is an important term in curling. It is used to describe which of the two teams has the right to throw the final stone at each end of the course.

The hammer is given to the team who misses and doesn’t score any points in the end of a game.
