The second sentence is correct. The first one might be ok, it would depend on context. But I'd definitely lean towards the second. LV4-26

N49*05'51.92" W0*21'09.88" France French I agree that both are idiomatic. If I were to find a difference at all costs, I'd say the first sentence tends to denote a slightly more irritated mood. (did halthecomputer have that in mind when he mentionned "context"?). But it may be just me. :) As a side note, nearly two years as a forum user have convinced me it makes things easier when you "put the word or phrase in the title when asking the question" (is that rule #4? Can't remember exactly). Hopefully, a mod will change the title for you. P

The first sentence is used by everybody I know except super snooty people, who would only use the second. Some English "grammarians" try to force French grammar rules onto English, which is a GERMANIC language. This goes way back over 11000 when French was studied by the elitists in English, and German was ignored. Thanks to William the Conqueror. You can use both terms without any problem really. In English you can end a sentence with a preposition, but in the Latin languages you cannot. Because the first sentence would not work in French, those who have studied Latin or French insist it is wrong in English, too. They are the ones who are wrong. Everybody in the US says it the first way (except the super snoots). You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Bluesky LinkedIn WhatsApp Email Share Link
