I want to make an iron golem farm inside my base but obviously it would spawn where it isn't supposed to, making it not very efficient. So are there any blocks that they don't spawn on? Slabs? Transparent blocks? I don't know. I just thing it would be neat but I would have to lay un spawn able blocks for iron golems around it.

Well, they won't spawn on right-side-up slabs, water etc but they will spawn in those slabs if there is a solid block underneith.

So you can't stop them from spawning by putting slabs on the floor but if the floor is made of slabs and the next floor down is out of range then they won't spawn there.

I don't see why they should spawn where they shouldn't though, they only spawn in a 16X16, 6 block high area around the center of your "village" so as long as you don't have any extra doors in the area (66 blocks from the center) that shift the center it should be easy enough to have that whole area inside the farm.

The door bit might be a reason to build it somewhere else though.

If you built it in the cellar it would be easy enough to only have solid blocks around the farm.

Or if you build it up in the air there would be no solid blocks around it.

As Hexalobular says, golems spawn in the area where the village center is calculated. So by controlling how the village is distributed you effect where the center will be and as long as the village doesn't change the golems will always spawn in the same 16X16 area at village center.

Are you sure about that? It's been a long time since I've played with golem spawning, but I thought that the slabs were enough to obstruct their hitbox and prevent spawning. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Absolutely sure. I tested in 1.8 a while back, if the slabs are directly on top of the solid surface (or half a block above) they just step out of the slabs, otherwise they are unable to move around if that would cause them to move into another movement blocking block.

There is an iron farm by Panda on the Wiki tutorial page http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Iron_golem_farming that uses a stack of redstone blocks where the golems can spawn on any level and he mentions that a stack of right side up upside-down half blocks (with a half block spacing) works as well. Also see attached pictures, not slabs but that is a solid block of glass blocks in the first two, not just a box, that's in 1.10

The third picture is from 1.8.9
