Household junk

Wooden furniture

Brick, asphalt and concrete

Construction and renovation debris

Appliances and E-waste

Many everyday appliances and small electronics are fine to throw away. Use the cards below to see which ones are safe to put in your dumpster.

Accepted Appliances

Most landfills accept non-hazardous household appliances that don’t contain refrigerants, oils or complex electronics. Commonly accepted appliances include:

  • Stoves, ovens and ranges
  • Washers and dryers without digital panels
  • Toasters, blenders and coffee makers
  • Fans, vacuums and space heaters
  • Grills (remove propane tanks first)

Accepted Electronics

While electronics should generally go to a recycling center, some landfills do accept a few items. The following materials are usually okay to toss:

  • Wired computer keyboards and mice
  • Power cords and chargers
  • Basic speakers and headphones
  • Remote controls and game controllers
  • Small gadgets without batteries or screens

Accepted Materials by Project Type

In some areas, your project type determines what materials you can put in your dumpster. Certain locations may have rules about putting different types of debris, like yard waste and household junk, in the same dumpster. If you're unclear about restrictions, double-check with our team beforehand.

Renovation Projects

Our dumpster rental service generally accepts construction debris, but some areas don’t allow you to mix it with general waste. You can toss these items, but consult with our team before including regular trash in the same bin.

  • Lumber
  • Drywall
  • Flooring material
  • Concrete
  • Cabinets
  • Wallpaper
  • Insulation
  • Carpet

Home Cleanouts

You can always throw general household waste in your home dumpster rental, including the items below. Reach out to our team for details on local dumpster rules — you may have to keep household junk separate from other kinds of debris.

  • Toys
  • Kitchenware
  • Books
  • Decor
  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Textiles
  • Plastic
  • Paper

Landscaping Projects

We typically accept yard waste in our dumpsters, but some areas require you to keep it separate from other types of refuse. If you have any questions about throwing out organic debris, our team is happy to answer them.

  • Dirt
  • Leaves
  • Lawn clippings
  • Tree limbs
  • Shrubs and bushes
  • Weeds

FAQs

How do I know if an item is accepted in my area?

When you rent a dumpster with us, we'll provide a complete list of accepted and prohibited items in your area in your personalized service agreement. If you have questions about a specific item, give us a call. Our experts will advise you based on your location.

If I need to toss more than one debris type, should I rent multiple containers?

Depending on your area, you may need to rent more than one container to dispose of different kinds of debris. If you have questions, reach out to our expert team. We can help you find the best solution for your disposal needs.

Is there a fee for throwing out a restricted item?

Yes. If the driver notices restricted items in your dumpster when we arrive for pickup, we may not be able to take the container until you remove them, which will cause a trip fee. Likewise, when the landfill finds prohibited items during disposal, they charge an additional disposal fee that we pass on to you. Disposal fees are charged according to what prohibited item is thrown away. Typical disposal fees range from $25 to $200.

What's the difference between an appliance and an electronic?

You'll typically find appliances in the kitchen or laundry room, where they perform a single household task using gas or electricity. Electronics, on the other hand, usually belong in the office or family room. They often contain circuit boards and batteries. Keep in mind that almost every rechargeable product sold today contains a lithium battery and cannot go in the landfill due to the risk of fire. The line between the two categories can be blurry, as more and more everyday appliances contain complex electronic components. If you have questions about a specific item, get in touch with our team.
