I'm at a loss for where to start on this issue (did a search, nothing I could relate to). Today while on my way back to my truck from a ride, we stopped to BS with some other sledders for about 10 minutes. When I went to start my sled to leave it backfired within the first 2 inches of starter rope pull, and sounded like a .44 Mag went off. After the backfire it took about 3 pulls to get my sled to start (normally 1 pull, unless sub freezing and cold). I rode the sled back to the parking area and turned it off. Moved my truck so I could load it on the deck and when I pulled it over same thing happened again. When I got home an hour later it did not backfire when I started it to back it off the deck. Sled is a 2011 M8 SP, 1200 miles, 100% stocks except for vents and running board inserts. What should I look at? C

Did you let it idle down before you shut the motor off? Rixster

I always do. I'll check the plugs. Man I hate changing the plugs on these motors too. Of course its easy once the pipe is removed, but still a pain. I just changed them at the beginning of the season too. A

did you run it really low on gas? I was screwing around the house earlier this year and never thought to check the gas before I went for a little rip, and my gas gauge is broken.. brought it back in the garage shut it off then started it again, bang. backfired. checked the gas and it was almost bone dry. real bone head move :face-icon-small-con summ8rmk

Polaris IMO it is very common on cat 700 and 800 laydown motors in my experience. I just make sure the pipe didn't blow off the can, and keep on trucking. My personal 800 has done it randomly for 7500 trouble free miles. zachman33

Lifetime Membership All these experiences that you boys are saying have all happened to me. Low gas, or not enough time to idle down before hitting the kill switch all have caused my 800 to backfire. Even on new plugs my sled has done this. Even though they are EFI I believe they load up sometimes for some reason then backfire like they have to much fuel to start out with when you pull the cord, just an idea of why it does it, but not a true fact. Normal... . My 1000 & my wife's 600 both do it once in a while... Never a problem after that... Nike D

It's a lean misfire. Do you hold the throttle lever open a touch when you go to start it? If so that lets in a little more air and it is lean. Don't hold the throttle at all and see what happens. Mine does this a lot when I hold the throttle open just a bit while starting. Its never been a big deal though unless it blows the pipe off the can. Put it back on and ride on without worry. C

Lifetime Membership what causes back fire on warm re-start Have you had the non-ethonal update done? I just had that done this year, now my sled does the same thing, but I am also running 10% eth. that I have never done before. Sled also blubbers at the exhaust Y, it used to be clean.: Not impressed with ethonal blend. Same sled 011 M8. I am guessing unburned gas left in the pipe or can. M

No throttle application when starting. Had the ethanol update done last year. It's only known 10% ethanol blend since new. I'm sure it's nothing. Just wanted to see if there was something specific I should look for. I was just curious since this sled has been nothing but trouble free except for an exhaust leak on one of the donuts when new. crossfire1

My 09 does this periodically also. I've just ignored it cause it still runs fine and everything looks good inside the motor. J

Gas vapors left in pipe and can from shut down. Nothing to worry about. You must log in or register to reply here.
