Fainting due to coughing is a condition called cough syncope. It usually occurs with persistent, prolonged and severe episodes of coughing. It is more common in men than women. What happens is while coughing the autonomic nervous system reflexes connecting the brain, heart and the respiratory system get stimulated. This causes a temporary drop in the blood pressure. Also, with severe coughing episodes, the pressure inside the chest increases further affecting the blood flow to and from the heart. As a result, the heart rate slows down and with interrupted blood flow, the brain receives less oxygen, ultimately causing you to pass out or faint.
Fainting while coughing is a transient phase but in any case you should seek medical help for prolonged, persistent cough immediately. Also, if you keep fainting with every severe coughing episode it might affect your brain. You might have to take blood tests and an electrocardiogram to rule out other causes of fainting. An X-ray may be required to determine the cause of cough. A neurological examination may be required to rule out other causes of fainting related to the central nervous system (CNS).
