What Do Santa's Reindeer Eat?

It is the time of year when we can look at how everyday machinery is used to help Santa to fulfil his epic journey.  Last year asked if, ‘Santa used Programmable Logic Controllers to manipulate time.’  This year we are going to investigate if it is possible to make reindeer food using a pet pack baler.

What Do Reindeer Eat?

Ordinary reindeer or Caribou originate from the Arctic, Tundra. Their diet includes, lichen (known as reindeer moss), willow and birch leaves, sedges and grains.  If they are deprived of food they will resort to eating Lemmings and  bird eggs.  In warmer seasons reindeer will graze on berries and some grasses but lichen is their favourite food.  Wild reindeer don’t eat hay but they may nibble at it if in captivity.

What Do Santa’s Reindeer Eat?

Obviously Santa’s reindeer must eat different food to normal reindeer because they can fly and display phenomenal stamina.  We tend to leave apples and carrots out for them on Christmas Eve but that is pretty standard for reindeer in general.  This then leads us to ask the question once more – What do Santa’s Reindeer Eat?  It would seem that Santa’s reindeer eat a lot of healthy carrots and greenery that makes them very strong and capable.  They obviously don’t get their flying skills directly from their food.

How Do Reindeer Fly?

This is the fifty thousand dollar question – the best thing to do is to ask your children because they will have the truthful answer.  It would seem that as long as reindeer eat well and sleep well they will be healthy enough to fly if they are given the magic ingredient by Santa and his elves.

Do We Need A Pet Pack Baler?

We wouldn’t really need a pet pack baler to feed Santa’s reindeer but we would need hay to provide comfortable bedding for them to sleep and rest on.  Like everyone if they get a good rest before and after Christmas Eve they will happy and healthy all year round.
