Chinese Hi guys, I am trying to figure out what the difference is b/w "what do you think about..." and "how do you think about...". Is there anyone who can elaborate on it a little bit? I really appreciate that! Thanks! JamesM

Los Angeles, California English, USA Welcome to the forum, kikkoman. "What do you think about..." sounds natural and normal to me. "How do you think about..." doesn't. It would be different if it were "How do you feel about..." or "How can you think about...", but "How do you think about..." doesn't sound natural, in my opinion. Please give us a complete sentence as an example when asking a question. This requirement is part of our rules here and it often clears up misunderstandings quickly. K

Chinese Thanks so much, James, and also sorry for not providing a complete sentence. Acutally, it bothers me all the time when I ask for others' opinions about something. Your answer is really helpful. Thanks once again!:) S

I think in most cases you would use "What do you think about ..." For example: - What do you think about this war? - I think it is terrible. But sometimes, if you want to probe into someone's thinking process more, "how do you think about ..." may be appropriate. As in: - How do you think about this war? - I think of it metaphorically, as a struggle between good and evil. JamesM

Los Angeles, California English, USA Wouldn't that be "How do you think of this war?" güey

Ukraine Russian, Ukrainian Hello, Consider the article title: How Do Ukrainians Think About Russians Now? How Do Ukrainians Think About Russians Now? The New Yorker The article is essentially about whether hatred by Ukrainians towards Russians in general is justifiable now in war time. The title doesn't sound very natural to me, and I would, too, expect rather feel instead of think there. What do you think? H

Texas US English “What do you think about” usually means “What is your opinion of”, though it could be a question about the object of your thoughts, as “What do you think about when you are walking in the park?” I suspect “how” creeps over from expressions such as “How do you like”; “How do you suppose” etc. lingobingo

Yes, “how do they feel about Russians?” would be more idiomatic. But your “What do you think?” at the end is more relevant to the original question in this thread: What do you think (= what is your opinion) about X? :thumbsup:How (= in what way) do you think about X? o_Ogüey

By that, I meant "What do you think (about my opinion)?" lingobingo

London English - England Yes, I know. And you wouldn’t say it as “how” do you think! You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Bluesky LinkedIn WhatsApp Email Share Link
