What Does DTF Mean? - Metro

As you navigate the choppy waters of dating in an attempt to find a stable (relation)ship, you shall encounter a strange and mysterious language that you must decipher.

This is a world in which you must know the difference between ‘dating’ and ‘seeing each other’, in which you need a detailed knowledge of dating trends from zombieing to stashing.

And, of course, you must learn your abbreviations, so you don’t mix up your DTR with your DTF.

In today’s lesson we shall discuss what it means to be DTF. There will be a test at the end, so pay attention.

What is DTF?

DTF stands for ‘down to f***’. That ‘f***’ refers to a naughty word that means ‘fornicate’.

The ‘down to’ means ‘up for’, which can be confusing. It means ‘open and enthusiastic to doing a thing’.

So being DTF means that you would be interested in having sexual relations with someone. Does this make sense?

Now, on to the usage.

DTF can be used to denote a casual dating setup rather than a formal relationship. Someone might say, for example, ‘I’m not looking for anything serious, I’m just DTF’.

It can also be used to describe the likelihood of getting laid following an interaction – ‘We’ll probably bone, he seems DTF’.

DTF can be used to invite someone to have sex, if you’re not a fan of typing out a proper proposal. ‘U up?’ can quickly progress to ‘DTF?’ and then voila, you’re getting your rocks off without a single full sentence being exchanged. How practical.

But be warned, as DTF can also be used in a judgmental sense, suggesting that because of the way a person looks or acts they must therefore be ‘DTF’. It’s important to note that no one is DTF if they aren’t giving enthusiastic consent, and how someone dresses or behaves does not indicate their DTF-ness. If you wish to know if someone is DTF, it’s wise to ask them rather than making assumptions.

There are some other less commonly used meanings assigned to DTF, including the biblical ‘down to forgive’ and the chummy ‘down to friendship’. If you’re not sure which meaning someone is using, look for context clues (are you in need of forgiveness?), but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

DTR, if you’re wondering, stands for ‘define the relationship’ – essentially the ‘what are we doing? Are you sleeping with other people?’ chat – which is quite different to DTF. Be careful when typing, as on a QWERTY keyboard the F and R are quite close, and you really don’t want to get the two mixed up.
