We all like to sit and believe that when a guy says something, he means just that. But most of us are severely wrong about the truth behind their words. Just like when a girl says she’s “fine” she really means something completely different, men have codes for what they mean when they call you certain things.

The phrase babe can mean a number of different things depending on where you stand with a guy. Not only do you have to take your relationship with the guy into consideration, but you also have to know his personality and how he interacts with other people, too.

Since everyone is different and, unless you ask them directly, it’s nearly impossible to tell what they mean by a specific word. However, guys are a lot alike. That being said, when a guy call you babe, he probably means one or more of these 10 things.

  1. He thinks you’re attractive

The first thing I think of when a guy calls me babe is that he think I’m attractive. I bet you’ve heard someone say, “Wow, she’s a babe!” before. Basically, this means that you’re attractive to them. This is especially true if you don’t know them very well and they’re just addressing you in some way. ‘Babe’ is a very common word for people to call someone that they think is hot, cute, or sexy. So if you’ve got someone calling you babe, check to see if they check you out often – because they probably are.

  1. It’s a pet name he calls a lot of people

Another thing to take into consideration is the one actually using the word, ‘babe’. I know a few guys that are just very affectionate with every girl they know – they even call their sisters babe! This doesn’t have so much to do with them liking you or thinking you’re attractive as it does the way they were raised. Some people just tend to use this word when referring to a girl in general because it’s polite and even considered chivalrous in some places. So if you notice him using this word an awful lot, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a player. It could mean he’s being polite.

  1. He’s feeling affectionate

All in all, the word ‘babe’ is one that’s used affectionately most of the time. The actual definition of ‘babe’ is an affectionate form of address, typically for someone with whom one has a sexual or romantic relationship. So if you’re hearing this word come from someone that you are involved with or even from someone who you thought was just a friend, it’s more likely being used in an affectionate way. It’s kind of like he’s saying you’re his with just that single word.

  1. He’s gauging your interest

The first time someone calls you a pet name like ‘babe’ can be a big milestone. If he’s calling you this word, it could be because he’s trying to figure out if you like him just like he likes you. One way to tell for sure if he’s gauging your interest with this word is to respond in a positive way or even call him babe! Then, if he starts showing more affection, calling you ‘babe’ more, or even being more physical with you (hugs, holding your hand, etc.) then it’s a sure sign that calling you ‘babe’ was gauging your interest.

  1. He’s trying to flirt with you

Guys are weird. I think you’ll agree with that much. When a guy starts calling you babe when the two of you are talking, it could be his way of trying to flirt. This word is typically used when flirting because it probably makes you blush – something he aims to do. It also is a simple hint that he likes you but he’s too shy to say anything. Basically, if a guy is ‘babe-ing’ you when you’re in a flirtatious setting, he’s only using that as a tool to increase the flirting vibe.

This one you’ll know quite obviously because you’ll more than likely be in bed, at a bar, or a few drinks in – and he’ll conveniently not be using your name for the entirety that you’re around him. Babe is used in place of a woman’s name when men have too many girls in their clutches. They’re afraid they’ll get the names mixed up so instead of calling them the wrong name, he uses an array of pet names – babe being the favorite.

  1. He’s trying to pick you up

Guys who are trying to pick up a girl are going to do all they can to make her feel special. This mean they’re going to want to call her cute pet names that make her think that she’s special to him. Babe is the most common word guys know because it’s simple and doesn’t promise more than a hookup – basically. If you’re out downtown and a guy you don’t know starts dropping ‘babe’ on you, he’s probably just trying to pick you up.

  1. He’s trying to get your attention

How do you feel when a guy calls you babe? Does it make you stop and pay attention to only him since he’s giving you such a cute little pet name? I bet it does and that’s exactly why he’s saying it. Sometimes guys use the word ‘babe’ as a means to get your attention – especially in a group setting or when he feels that your attention has wandered from your conversation with him.

  1. He wants to look cool in front of his friends

This word can also be used sarcastically or in a means to look cool and good in front of his friends. Calling you babe could indicate that you’re his and he wants to make a point to let all his friends know that you are there for him and only him. It also makes him look like a bit of a stud, too.

  1. He wants to date you

If you’ve been talking to this guy for a while and things are going great and you probably want to take the next step in your relationship and actually date him, his calling you ‘babe’ could just mean that he wants to date you. I know that whenever I’ve been into a guy for a while and he pulled out that word, we were dating within about a week.

So, as you can see, it’s more about how the guy acts and where you are when he calls you ‘babe’ that really tells you what he means.
