  1. Moment of inertia

The moment of inertia, otherwise known as the mass moment of inertia, angular mass, second moment of mass, or most accurately, rotational inertia, of a rigid body is a quantity that determines the torque needed for a desired angular acceleration about a rotational axis, akin to how mass determines the force needed for a desired acceleration. It depends on the body's mass distribution and the axis chosen, with larger moments requiring more torque to change the body's rate of rotation. It is an extensive (additive) property: for a point mass the moment of inertia is simply the mass times the square of the perpendicular distance to the axis of rotation. The moment of inertia of a rigid composite system is the sum of the moments of inertia of its component subsystems (all taken about the same axis). Its simplest definition is the second moment of mass with respect to distance from an axis. For bodies constrained to rotate in a plane, only their moment of inertia about an axis perpendicular to the plane, a scalar value, matters. For bodies free to rotate in three dimensions, their moments can be described by a symmetric 3 × 3 matrix, with a set of mutually perpendicular principal axes for which this matrix is diagonal and torques around the axes act independently of each other.

  1. moment of inertia

Moment of inertia, often referred to as rotational inertia, is a physical quantity that describes the distribution of an object's mass relative to its rotation axis. It represents the resistance of the object to change in its rotational motion about the axis. It depends not only on the mass of the object, but also how that mass is distributed in respect to the axis of rotation. The moment of inertia is calculated by summing the products of each small mass element of the object and the square of its distance from the axis of rotation.

  1. Moment of inertia

Moment of inertia is a property of rotating bodies that defines its resistance to a change in angular velocity about an axis of rotation. It is how rotation of a body is affected by Newton's law of inertia, which states "Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight forward except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by forces impressed." In this context, inertia refers to resistance to change. Moment of inertia applies to an extended body in which the mass is constrained to rotate around an axis. It arises as a combination of mass and geometry in the study of the movement of continuous bodies, or assemblies of particles, known as rigid body dynamics. It is the moment of inertia of the pole carried by a tight-rope walker that resists rotation and helps the walker maintain balance. In the same way the long axis of a dragster resists turning forces which helps keep it moving in a straight line.
