Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion gifted us with new track WAP last year but thanks to the pandemic, the pair weren’t able to perform their hit song on stage together until the 2021 Grammy Awards.

The sexually charged music video and x-rated lyrics for the song made quite the, erm, splash when the track was first released and despite there being an array of amazing performances at the 2021 Grammys, it was Cardi and Megan who stole the show with their larger than life rendition of WAP.

For anyone still wondering, here’s exactly what WAP means.

What does WAP mean?

‘WAP’ has a couple of meanings in slang and popular culture, but in the context of the song, WAP is an acronym for ‘wet ass p***y’.

That’s right, Cardi and Megan didn’t come to play with this one -Cardi herself told Hot97 that it was tricky for her to tone down this ‘nasty’ tune, adding: ‘It was really hard for me to clean this song up.’

According to Urban Dictionary, ‘wap’ can also mean ‘gun’, or be an acronym for ‘with a passion’.

Slang aside, ‘WAP’ can also be an acronym for Wireless Access Point, which is a device that allows people wireless access to wired internet.

So if you plan on using the phrase ‘WAP’ any time in the future, be very careful what situation you use it in and who you say it to.

While many have lauded the sex-positive track and its video as solid gold, it has also proven controversial, with high profile conservatives sharing their displeasure.

For instance, Republican Congressional candidate James P Bradley tweeted: ‘Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure. 

‘Their new “song” The #WAP (which i heard accidentally) made me want to pour holy water in my ears and I feel sorry for future girls if this is their role model!’

However Metro.co.uk’s Emma Kelly countered by writing: ‘Their outrage just proves something we already know – that society hates sexual women, and particularly, sexually confident Black women.’
