MoreWhatever Happened to Aunt Alice is a 1969 horror-thriller directed by Lee H. Katzin and produced by Robert Aldrich. It was the third installment of Aldrich’s hagsploitation phase. The first two being Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. Geraldine Page plays Claire Marrable who murders her elderly housekeepers and confiscates their money. Ruth Gordon plays Alice Dimmock who takes the job as the next housekeeper in order to investigate the disappearance of her friend who was the previous maid. With the help her nephew, Mike Darrah, played by Robert Fuller, Alice gets closer and closer to uncovering Claire’s deadly secrets.Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice is a cult classic of the 1960’s horror genre. It is known for it’s dark suspenseful tone and intense acting from Page and Gordon.
Translate Translated from byMore thrilling than any Hitchcock movie. More committed acting than any Meryl performance. More iconic wigs than any Nicole Kidman. I don't know a better movie.
Translate Translated from byHooted and hollered when miss Geraldine Page called the dog a “vagrant bitch” like that’s crazy lmao
These ladies were absolutely chewing it UP though like you better work honeyyyyy
Translate Translated from byA hagsploitation film starring Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon that I didn’t even know existed!? This was like finding a hundred dollar bill in the pocket of an old coat! I don’t know what good deed I did, but clearly the universe wanted to give me a big kiss when this treasure showed up on the Movies! channel yesterday afternoon.
It’s probably a good thing that it isn’t available on any streaming service because if I had access to it on demand, I probably wouldn’t be able to watch anything else for at least the next month. Does it matter that it seemed to have been mercilessly chopped up to accommodate the copious ads that this basic cable channel runs?…
Translate Translated from byyeah sure I’ve only seen two of her movies before this but Ruth Gordon absolutely slays every role she takes. I’m certain of it.
Translate Translated from byRyan Murphy gave this movie as an only direction to Jessica Lange anytime he worked with her.
Translate Translated from by"You've had such rotten luck with your housekeepers Aunt Claire.""Have I? Actually, I think I've done rather well."
Robert Aldrich evidently felt there was more box office to be mined from the subgenre he popularized, so he set out to produce this adaptation of Ursula Curtiss' novel "The Forbidden Garden" about a gold-digging serial killer who cleans out the savings accounts of her hired help before permanently dispatching them. Geraldine Page stars as Mrs. Claire Marrable, a recently widowed society wife who, after being informed by her estate attorney that her expired husband left her nothing but debts, is driven to commit murder after murder instead of suffering the indignity of going out and actually getting a real job.…
Translate Translated from byA dark, campy and sometimes funny film about a woman who murders and buries her maids in her garden and a new maid who suspects the woman and tries to find evidence. Wasn't as tense or disturbing as I thought it would be but the two performances of the woman and the maid are over the top and make the film fun. I liked the sunny desert setting.
Translate Translated from byBeware of old ladies with lots of pine trees in their garden.
Rather unknown terrific crime mystery gem, especially the performance by Geraldine Page is just a joy to watch.
Fun fact, it was produced by Robert „What Ever Happened To Baby Jane“ Aldrich.
Translate Translated from byThat dog 🐕 was the best actor in the whole movie — what a performance! This campy gem is so good, and Geraldine Page’s turn is absolutely vicious (the original Mean Girl energy). Her acting duel with Ruth Gordon — fresh off her Oscar win for Rosemary’s Baby — is pure delight.Throughout the film, we watch Page commit all kinds of wickedness and get away with it… until the pot finally boils over and everything spills out. By the end, you’re left shocked at how easily a formerly glamorous woman can turn into an unhinged, bitchy psychopath.
Grade : “B+”
Translate Translated from byGeraldine Page's greedy murderous harridan vs Ruth Gordon's watchful undercover sleuth + some killer music. Also some boring romance stuff with bit players. Fight!
Translate Translated from byPYP2025 Day 1: Something Old
Grinningly malevolent yarn about a clever homicidal sociopath operating within polite society, or rather an older widow (Geraldine Page) who's figured out how to game the system (aka murder caretakers and bury them in the backyard after acquiring all their financial assets, as a way to afford her life since her late husband squandered all their money and left her penniless) until she meets her match in Ruth Gordon, an even older lady who applies for the open caretaker job but might have ulterior motives of her own...
There's a lot to like about this one that was trying to capitalize on "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane"('s attention-grabbing title) and other question-sentence flicks of…
