Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice is a 1969 horror-thriller directed by Lee H. Katzin and produced by Robert Aldrich. It was the third installment of Aldrich’s hagsploitation phase. The first two being Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. Geraldine Page plays Claire Marrable who murders her elderly housekeepers and confiscates their money. Ruth Gordon plays Alice Dimmock who takes the job as the next housekeeper in order to investigate the disappearance of her friend who was the previous maid. With the help her nephew, Mike Darrah, played by Robert Fuller, Alice gets closer and closer to uncovering Claire’s deadly secrets.Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice is a cult classic of the 1960’s horror genre. It is known for it’s dark suspenseful tone and intense acting from Page and Gordon.

A hagsploitation film starring Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon that I didn’t even know existed!? This was like finding a hundred dollar bill in the pocket of an old coat! I don’t know what good deed I did, but clearly the universe wanted to give me a big kiss when this treasure showed up on the Movies! channel yesterday afternoon. 

It’s probably a good thing that it isn’t available on any streaming service because if I had access to it on demand, I probably wouldn’t be able to watch anything else for at least the next month. Does it matter that it seemed to have been mercilessly chopped up to accommodate the copious ads that this basic cable channel runs?…

Geraldine Page stars as Mrs. Claire Marrable, a recently widowed society wife who, after being informed by her estate attorney that her expired husband left her nothing but debts, is driven to commit murder after murder instead of suffering the indignity of going out and actually getting a real job.…

A dark, campy and sometimes funny film about a woman who murders and buries her maids in her garden and a new maid who suspects the woman and tries to find evidence. Wasn't as tense or disturbing as I thought it would be but the two performances of the woman and the maid are over the top and make the film fun. I liked the sunny desert setting.

That dog 🐕 was the best actor in the whole movie — what a performance! This campy gem is so good, and Geraldine Page’s turn is absolutely vicious (the original Mean Girl energy). Her acting duel with Ruth Gordon — fresh off her Oscar win for Rosemary’s Baby — is pure delight.Throughout the film, we watch Page commit all kinds of wickedness and get away with it… until the pot finally boils over and everything spills out. By the end, you’re left shocked at how easily a formerly glamorous woman can turn into an unhinged, bitchy psychopath.
