NCIS season 18 came to an end in May 2021 on CBS, finishing on a major cliffhanger which will play out going into series 19. There were many unexpected exits this time around, one of which was chief medical examiner Jimmy Palmer's (played by Brian Dietzen) wife Breena (Michelle Pierce). Sadly, it was an emotional end to their romance which left fans teary-eyed.

What happened to Palmer's wife in NCIS? 

Palmer and Breena met through work and hit it off straight away as she was a mortician and so had a similar interest in medical science.

They went on to get married in 2012 and had daughter Victoria together which the rest of the NCIS team were delighted about.

Things seemed to be a bit rocky between the pair when it came to series 17 as Palmer had to work a lot which meant cancelling some of their plans.

But the real heartbreaker came in season 18 as Breena was sadly no longer in the picture.

Season 18 kept flitting between the past and the present which revealed some details of what happened in between.

The biggest revelation though came in episode seven entitled The First Day which was shot during the times of the coronavirus pandemic.

In an upsetting moment, it is revealed that Palmer's wife died of Covid-19.

The scene where this news was dropped came about as Palmer thanked the team for their support.

Speaking to Agent Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham), Palmer explained why his mum had moved in with him.

He said: "You guys were so great, when, you know ... I lost Breena.

"But between work, single parenting, school, it just got to be too much. So, I called in a lifeline."

The cause of her death was said in a more subtle manner with Palmer handing out cleaning supplies and feeling upset when he had to use the term Covid-19.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dietzen said: "The producers let me know that we want the advent of COVID to hit our team.

"And yet, we don't want to lose a team member.

"So the prospect of having Jimmy lose his wife, the most optimistic team member lose someone, came to the table and they thought it would be a great storytelling mechanic — albeit very, very sad.

"So they went ahead with it. I was notified ahead of time and prepared for it, I suppose, emotionally."

Breena wasn't the only character fans had to say goodbye to either.

Tobias Fornell's (Joe Spano) daughter Emily (Juliette Angelo) continued to have a serious drug problem which led to her having an overdose.

Unfortunately, this time she wasn't able to be revived and died in hospital, leaving Fornell devastated.
