What Is The Definition Of Box Out?

1. This refers to when a basketball player tries to establish a better rebounding position than their opponent. Boxing out entails widening your stance and arms and using your body to form a barrier between the opponent and the basket.

Boxing out is crucial for a player if they want to have success at rebounding the ball at both ends of the floor. It is also important to understand the difference between boxing out and rebounding, as the two are completely different, yet may get confused at times.

Rebounding is the act of gaining possession of a missed field goal (shot) or loose ball, while boxing out is the act of establishing position between the rim and your opponent so that your opponent will not have the advantage to rebound the ball. While establishing position under the basket, a player will try to predict where the ball will fall or bounce if that shot misses, and set up there to prevent their opponent from progressing forward.
