A group of owls is officially called a parliament. Some people refer to a group of owls as a brood, diss, nest, looming or wisdom.

There are around 200 species of owls in the world today. Most are solitary creatures that prefer living alone. Most owls are nocturnal and hunt small mammals, other birds and insects. They live on every continent on Earth except Antarctica. Owls have adapted to be stealthy hunters and their feathers help them blend in almost flawlessly to their surroundings. When an owl eats, it only digests the meaty parts of its prey and throws up the indigestible parts, such as feathers, fur and bones.

The talons and beak of an owl are the strongest parts of its body. It uses these parts to crush the skull of its prey and some smaller species like the burrowing owl isn’t quite as strong as other, larger species.

The largest owl species is the Eurasian eagle owl. This species can grow to be around two feet tall and weigh close to 10 pounds. The smallest owl species is called the elf owl. This owl only grows to a maximum height of around 5.7 inches and weighs around 2 ounces.
