While Summer Olympic sports such as swimming, gymnastics, and football are more popular with worldwide audiences, there are other Olympic games that most people know little about. An event since the 1912 Olympics, the modern pentathlon is often forgotten and has a name that might turn off potential spectators. With a little knowledge of Greek roots and prefixes though, the name of the pentathlon gives away its most basic characteristics. The word pente, in Greek, means “five,” while -athlon means “contest,” conveying that the sport comprises five different events in one. However, the real curiosity comes from questioning the sport’s specifics: What are these contests, and what makes a specific game a part of the pentathlon? And if we’re talking modern, what makes it any different from the traditional pentathlon?

The purpose behind the pentathlon dates back to the ancient Olympic Games. Originally, it was developed as a sporting event to determine the most-skilled athlete and the perfect soldier. Each of the five original pentathlon events during these ancient games—long jumping, javelin throwing, discus throwing, footracing, and wrestling—was intended to emphasize skills essential for all soldiers of the time, who would face similar trials in battle. The modern pentathlon, as the name suggests, modernized this type of tournament. The five events in the modern pentathlon—fencing, swimming, horse riding, pistol shooting, and running—were chosen to reflect skills that cavalry soldiers of the 19th-century ought to possess and refine.

Modern soldiers, the event suggests, should have sword fighting skills, the ability to swim quickly, the ability to ride a horse that is unknown to the rider, accurate marksmanship with a pistol, and great agility. Though the competition was updated for 19th-century warfare, it has become dated as a judge of an ideal soldier. Pistols and swords are infrequently used in today’s warfare, and horses even less, with a fair portion of military combat now occurring through the use of remote machinery and more advanced and deadly weaponry. Military practices of today are less focused on the physical requirements of the modern pentathlon and the pentathlon before it. Like all other Olympic events, the modern pentathlon highlights physical fitness, but it also underlines the evolving history of human physicality around the world.
