I just got an alert on Credit Expert saying I had a public record added under AMEX who I just paid off a week ago. Said it was a "Grid Code G (Collections)". What does that mean? Why are they reporting it as a public record after I paid them off?

I just pulled a new report and it was not on my public records.

I'm confused????

What was the status before you paid? Was it current in good standing, late or a charge off?

It said "charge-off" "sent to collections" but they never sent it to a 3rd party collection agency.

I've never heard of "Grid Code G". They probably had internal collections handling it, especially if it was just recently charged off. The only thing I can suggest would be to dispute it as not mine if it shows up.

Amex has been friendly to charge offs if they pay in full. They have allowed those that paid the accts off to reopen new accts in 1 year after they paid. You might call Amex and ask if they would give you a better rating on your report since you did pay it. Give them a sob story, this and that happened, and while it was never my intent to not pay, I was unable due to these circumstances. But the minute I was able to pay, I did. You never know. You might run into someone with a heart.

Good luck.

Well I only paid 75% of the total debt, so it was a settlement, that could be why, but I didn't think they would put it up as a public record, wont that make my score go down?

If it has already been reported as a charge off, I don't think showing it as settled will drop your score. On the other hand, if it wasn't previously reported as a charge off, then a new collection, charge off etc. will definitely drop your score. How much depends on what other negative items are on there. If no other negs, it will hurt a lot. If a few others, it will hurt, but not as much. If there are a lot of negs there, it will still hurt some, but not nearly as much.

Yeah, the status has always been charge-off since 8/2001....the lady who handled my account said it would be reported as a "paid settlement", she said to call her back on 3/11 to request information on the reporting of the paid debt.

Is there a possibility that it was miscoded by Amex? Maybe calling them would help. They could tell you if it was valid and if so - why they coded it that way.

But can they report it as a public record? I thought they only did that if you were taken to court?

I had a similar listing on Experian, and it turned out in my case at least that collections and public records are considered the same thing on the Alerts.

Same on EQ...not a true public record...but they group them together for alert purposes.

A "G" code appears on the tradeline listing of an Experian credit report, in the coded 24-month status section, flagging when the account was put into collections.
