What are sand fleas? Sand fleas, also known as beach fleas, sand hoppers, or beach hoppers, are small, jumping crustaceans belonging to the family Talitridae and the order Amphipoda. Despite their name, sand fleas are not actually fleas or even insects. They are tiny crustaceans that resemble shrimp and are often found in moist, sandy environments like beaches.
Several pests are commonly mistaken for sand fleas, leading to confusion about their behavior and whether they bite. These include:
- Sand flies: True flies that bite and feed on blood
- Tunga penetrans: Also known as chigoe fleas or “true” sand fleas, these parasitic insects can burrow into the skin, especially in tropical areas like South America and parts of Africa
- Other small beach-dwelling insects or mites that may cause bites or irritation
While all of these are arthropods, they are not closely related. The confusion between these pests, especially the biting behavior of chigoes and sand flies, has contributed to the widespread but incorrect belief that sand fleas (Talitridae) bite humans. In reality, sand fleas do not bite.
What do sand fleas look like?
Sand fleas are small, shrimp-like crustaceans. Here’s what they look like:
- Size: Most are tiny, typically around one quarter of an inch to one inch long
- Shape: Their bodies are laterally compressed (flattened side to side), which helps them move through sand and jump
- Color: They’re usually gray, brown, or sandy-colored, allowing them to blend in with their surroundings
- Legs: Long hind legs designed for hopping, similar to a real flea
- Antennae: Two pairs of antennae extend from their heads

Do sand fleas bite? Are they dangerous?
Sand fleas do not bite humans, and they are not dangerous. These tiny crustaceans are scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter along the beach. They are not parasites and do not burrow or bite into skin or feed on blood. Interestingly, some people catch sand fleas, typically the larger species, for use as fishing bait for surf fishing.
The confusion about sand fleas being dangerous often comes from other pests that are commonly mistaken for them. Like we briefly mentioned above, sand flies, for example, are true biting insects that feed on blood and can cause itchy welts. Tunga penetrans are parasitic fleas found in tropical regions that can burrow into human skin. These pests are usually responsible for the bites or skin irritation people associate with the term "sand flea."
Where do sand fleas live?
Their common name answers this question: sand fleas live in sand. More specifically, sand fleas live on sandy beaches near the high-tide mark. They are most active at night, when they’ll emerge to forage for food. During the day, they’ll stay buried in the sand.
Sand fleas live in many coastal areas. Some species are found along the Atlantic coast, including Orchestia gammarellus, which is native to Europe but now also lives in parts of North America. Other types, like the Gulf sand hopper and western Gulf sand hopper, are found along the Gulf coast. You can even find sand fleas on the Pacific coast—for example, one species near Santa Barbara helps clean up kelp on the beach.

Can sand fleas travel home with you?
Sand fleas from the beach are very unlikely to travel home with you. They need moist, sandy environments to survive and can’t live long away from the shore. If one somehow ends up in your beach gear, it probably won’t survive for more than a few hours. However, there are a few ways to help ensure they don’t hitchhike home with you:
- Shake out towels and blankets before leaving the beach to remove any small critters or debris.
- Rinse off beach gear like chairs, coolers, and buckets with fresh water.
- Avoid sitting or lying directly on wet sand, especially during dawn or dusk when sand fleas are most active.
- Use a beach mat or towel as a barrier between you and the sand.
So what is the only similarity between true fleas and this small, sand-loving crustacean? Their jumping abilities.
