corundum, naturally occurring aluminum oxide mineral (Al2O3) that is, after diamond, the hardest known natural substance. Its finer varieties are the gemstones sapphire and ruby (qq.v.), and its mixtures with iron oxides and other minerals are called emery (q.v.). Corundum in its pure state is colourless, but the presence of small amounts of impurities can impart a broad range of hues to the mineral.
