What does GSM mean in fabric? GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter (g/m2). It is the weight of the fabric if you take a sheet of material which is one meter by one meter square and weigh it in grams.
It is a bench mark specification to meet production manufacturing requirements. It is also a standard (one of many) upon which different materials are compared.
When we design a new product we have a GSM target depending on the products use, the weave, and the required cost.
When we do quality control (during and after production) we weigh the material to make sure that it meets the target GSM (within tolerances).
Normal tolerance for GSM is +/- 3%. So a 300 GSM material can vary in weight between 291 and 309 GSM.
Is a higher GSM better?
No. Although many marketing companies will have you believe that higher GSM is better.
All else being equal, higher GSM towel have more more microfiber, and are therefore more expensive. It will also be thicker and will absorb more total liquid.
But, there are other factors that determine the quality of a towel.
The main factor is the quality of the yarn. Secondary factors are the construction of the towel. The machines that the material is woven on. The precision of the fiber “splitting” process.
Lower quality microfiber material can be made to have a higher GSM and use less microfiber material, by utilizing a thicker “base layer” of 100% polyester.
Most microfiber material is made by weaving the surface yarn through a base layer. The surface yarn is the part of the material with pile, on the outside, that you feel. The base layer is the structure that the surface layer yarn is woven through.
It is possible to make less expensive and lower quality towels that feel heavier and weigh (higher GSM) more by using a thicker base layer yarn. For example, there are some towels in which the base layer is up to 50% of the total fabric weight.
How does it change cleaning ability?
All else being equal, higher GSM material, will have more microfiber and will be thicker and absorb more water.
Many higher GSM Towels will have a higher pile which can reduce surface pressure when wiping. Lower GSM towel will often have a lower pile and will be more aggressive when scrubbing.
Other factors, like the weave type, construction, and yarn quality will have more effect on cleaning ability than GSM.
What GSM is my towel?
To determine the GSM of your towel you will need a scale and a tape measure.
Weigh the towel in grams
Measure the towel in centimeters. Both length and width.
Imperial to Metric Conversion: 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
Convert centimeters to meters by dividing each length and width by 100.
Multiply length by width
Divide the weight by the number found above (#4: L x W)
Example 1:
Towel weight: 50 grams
Towel size: 16” x 16”: 40.64 x 40.64cm
0.4064 x 0.4064
0.165
50 / 0.165 = 303 GSM
Example 2:
Towel weight: 200 grams
Towel size: 16” x 24” : 40.64 x 60.96
0.4064 x 0.6096
0.2477
200 / 0.2477 = 807 GSM

Often when we are searching for clothing fabrics we fail to understand how to identify a good quality fabric. Fabrics usually are compared to each other using GSM density.
What is GSM?
GSM is short for grams per square meter. All fabrics have a weight, and the standard measurement for the weight and quality of fabrics i.e. grams per square meter. This number refers to the density of the fabric.
Low GSM density fabrics are very thin and light and are often see through. The higher the GSM density the heavier the cloth becomes. When it comes to T-shirts, Opium Valley chooses the best fabrics in T-shirt category. Even though a higher GSM fabric offers higher durability, but when it comes to T-shirts these heavy fabrics are not wearable and preferable during summer weather.
T-shirts chosen by us have a GSM strength of 180. This makes the T-shirts sufficiently dense to ensure they are long lasting, durable and offer high comfort during summers as a top wear and during winters as an inner wear.
A lot of times we get attracted towards low prices of T-shirts from other websites. It is highly important to check the GSM strength of these fabrics as brands prefer to economize on it and offer cheap cloth which are easily destructible. Our tests indicate that 180GSM fabrics are the best suited for T-shirts.
We offer same cloth material for both Printed and Ultimate basic T-shirts, hence not negotiating on the quality of the T-shirt even though the price of Ultimate Basics is low. T-shirts offered by us are 100% Premium Cotton which are Super Combed with Double stitching. You can keep the worry of T-shirt shrinking, lint accumulations and Colour fading aside with our Bio-Washed T-shirts.
Checkout our Tshirts at https://opiumvalley.com/collections/t-shirts
Polos on the other hand come in a variety of GSMs. A standard Polo comes in 200GSM cloth, whereas a Premium Polo which we sell is of 240 GSM offering a thicker fabric. A 240 GSM thick Premium Polo also offers sturdy collars which blend well to the idea of Collar down for Formals and Collar up for Parties.
Opium Valley’s Premium Polos are 100% Premium cotton of 240 GSM thickness. These are like T-shirts super combed and Bio-Washed too.
Zipper and Non- Zipper Hoodies selected by us are of 320GSM which helps them to become the Ultimate winterwears. The fabric of the hoodies is 100% cotton with Brushed Fleece Fabric which gives 100% thermal insulation.

If you're wondering what is gsm in fabric, it's a measurement used to describe weight referring to grams per square meter.

In the fashion industry there are many terms that we use, we wanted to explain a few of these to help customers make good decisions when purchasing their clothes.
GSM is simply the weight of the fabric, grams per square metre. It is measured by cutting a circle of fabric out with a special cutter and weighing it on fabric weighing scales. Knowing the GSM will let you know how heavy the fabric of your garment is going to be.
Just to explain a couple of things . . . . Raw fibre (cotton, linen, bamboo etc) is processed and spun into yarn. The yarn is then woven or knitted into fabric.
So back to the weight of the final fabric, this can vary due to a few things.
The thickness of the actual yarnSome yarns are made thicker than others. For example wool fibre is different thicknesses which are referred to as microns. The smaller the micron, the finer the wool. So a yarn of finer micron wool would be lighter.
The composition of the yarnSome fibres have more actual weight than others, therefore when spun into yarn, they start off heavier. Our bamboo jersey weighs so much more than organic cotton jersey. Bamboo simply is heavier.
The weave of the fabric or style of knittingSome fabrics are a loose weave and very open or sheer. Others are tightly woven and therefore more yarn is used.
All of things vary when it comes to fabric, making the GSM something tangible that we can look at to decide to suitability of the fabric.
How to weigh a fabricFirst you cut a circle of the fabric. This is done with a cutter (see below) and you are best to cut two at once from different parts of the fabric. Fabric can vary from one side to the other, so you cut two and do an average.
You then simply weigh it on the fabric weighing scales to get your GSM
When we get our new batches of fabrics in, we weigh them to see what the weight is. 5% up or down is the industry standard on variance.
To show how this info is relevant to you, our organic cotton Bestowed label is mostly 3 different types of cotton knits.
Most of our Bestowed dresses and tops (Blythe, Dita, Nasturtium etc) are in a 100% cotton knit which is like your t shirt fabric. This fabric weighs 140-150GSM. It's heavy enough to not be sheer when worn as a dress but still light enough to wear in summer.
Pics below are 140gsm fabric
Our superfine cotton knit which is the fabric we use to make our Quirk shrug, Ester cardi, Swivel top, Loopy scarves etc is very light and sheer and only weighs 60GSM. It's only 1/3 of the weight of the other fabric.
Pics below are 60gsm fabric
Our stretch organic cotton knit has 8% Lycra in the yarn to give it more stretch and return than the knit fabric without Lycra. This is used in styles like the Trinity pants, leggings and fitted singlet tops like Daria. We also use this fabric for many waistbands in both Bestowed and RANT. This fabric weighs 220GSM.
Pics below are 220gsm fabric
Our Australian made bamboo jersey has varied a lot over the years and we decided that we prefer it to be heavier as we can use it then for both tops and bottoms, as the lighter batches are only suitable for tops. The thicker the fabric, the longer it lasts and that's important to me. Also a thicker bamboo tops covers more, making the tops more flattering to wear. The bamboo jersey has varied from 230GSM - 300GSM. The new batches that we have had made, we request 280-300GSM.
We are going to include the GSM on the new products we put online starting this season. It's a little hard with some existing styles as we have run them for many seasons and the batches all vary, but we will do our best to add this extra information now you are all educated on fabric weights.
The Bestowed garments already have the GSM included in the fabric description on each product.
I hope this has been interesting and helps you when making a decision about purchases. If you ever need extra info or help deciding if one of our garments is suitable for what you're needing, call or email us.
Cheers,
Sarah
