Half-time Enrollment

What is half-time enrollment?

Half-time enrollment, also called part-time enrollment, is a student’s registration status carrying a half-time academic workload.

How many credits do you need to be considered a half-time enrollment?

  • Typically, undergraduate students considered full-time are taking 12 or more credits or around four classes per semester.
    • Students classified as half-time enrollment must be registered for at least six credits per semester (generally two to three classes).
  • Full-time graduate students generally need nine or more credits to qualify, and half-time enrollment graduate students need at least four and a half credits per semester.

How does enrollment status affect school cost?

Half-time enrollment can affect a student’s cost of attendance (COA), and scholarship aid may also be adjusted when a students’ status changes. Half-time enrollment standing may also fluctuate per non-standard programs and semester sessions.

For most federal grants and work-study aid (except for the Pell Grant), half-time enrollment students may receive 50% of their semester award if they are half-time status at the time of the census.

Most private lenders and many federal direct loans (subsidized, unsubsidized, PLUS, and parent PLUS loans) require borrowers to have at least half-time enrollment status to qualify for financial aid.

Depending on the lender, repayment may begin immediately if a borrower falls below half-time enrollment status.
